Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Basic Life Support [BLS] - Generic - HR Only required
  • A minimum of 6 months employment in an ambulatory physician practice setting in the last 3 years (0-1 year preferred)
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action in a timely fashion.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with staff, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must possess the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel and the general public.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak clearly and understand the English language.
  • Must meet 1 of the following within 1 year of employment if not completed prior to hire date: Preferred successful completion of Medical Assistant School/Program or comparable training within related discipline. Enrollment in program to enhance MA skills: Registered (RMA), Certified (CMA), Certified Clinical MA (CCMA). Enrollment in program leading to further skill development with medical field (including but not limited to CNA, EMT, LPN, RN, CNM, NP, PA, MD, DO).

  • Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory setting (0-1 year preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Plans appropriately for patient care: Anticipates needs of patient visits to optimize provider time. Ensures necessary paperwork has been completed and results are received prior to visit. Completes patient forms as necessary for the department. Manages incoming documents, including faxing and scanning per office protocols.
  • Performs patient intake functions: Verifies patients using two identifiers. Monitors provider schedules to ensure timely and efficient patient flow, keeping patients and staff informed of delays. Obtains necessary vital signs per department SOP. Records visit intake information clearly and accurately. Reviews preventative health needs and places orders as needed. Reviews and updates medication lists, allergies, histories, smoking status, and social determinants of health. Demonstrates proficiency in EHR, documenting information accurately. Prioritizes delegated tasks based on patient care needs and office activities.
  • Effectively communicates with patients/family members: Informs patients of test results and relays recommendations under physician/provider direction. Documents all patient telephone conversations accurately and relays patient questions/requests to the provider. Participates in team-based care and patient education initiatives.
  • Prepares and assists with office procedures: Assists providers with office-based procedures, preparing supplies and patients. Labels and packages specimens and stores them appropriately. Cleans and sterilizes exam rooms and instruments using proper precautions.
  • Provides individualized, age-specific care: Administers and documents immunizations ordered by providers, ensuring patients/guardians receive necessary information. Ensures vaccine integrity and complies with inventory and reporting requirements. Demonstrates understanding of appropriate immunization schedules. Performs other related clinical duties as ordered by a provider, such as EKGs, vision exams, hearing exams, pulse oximetry, and ear lavage. Maintains safety and compliance logs. Recognizes limitations and seeks advice when needed.
  • Supports the general overall functioning of the office: Accepts assignments for patient care within the scope of the job. Performs administrative functions such as scheduling appointments, managing work queues and in-baskets, and scanning documents. Places orders for appointments per provider instructions. Processes prescription refills. Stocks patient rooms and maintains supply room organization. Attends department huddles and meetings, communicating relevant information. Performs other duties as assigned.
