About The Position

The practice of a physician assistant shall include medical services within the education, training and experience of the physician assistant that are delegated by the supervising physician. Medical services rendered may include, but are not limited to: obtaining patient histories and performing physical examinations; ordering and/or performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; formulating a diagnosis; developing and implementing a treatment plan; monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions; assisting in surgical procedures; offering counseling and education to meet patient needs; making appropriate referrals. The Surgical Physician Assistant, in an emergency, shall be authorized to treat any medical disease and/or perform any medical and surgical procedures at the hospital for affiliates. An emergency, for these purposed, is defined as a situation in which any delay in administering treatment would result in serious harm to the patient or an immediate threat to life of the patient and that a qualified practitioner is not immediately available. The activities listed above may be performed in any setting authorized by the supervising physician, including but not limited to, clinics, hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, and other institution settings. In addition to the Core Skills listed here, Surgical PA’s will request validation to perform department specific skills.

Requirements

BS Required
Graduate of an accredited Physician’s Assistant program required
NYS License and registration as Physician Assistant required
NCCPA certification required
OHS Fit Test
OHS Annual Assessment

Responsibilities

Obtains patient histories and performs physical examinations; ordering and performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; formulating diagnosis, developing and implementing a treatment plan.
Prescribes medications for the patient.
Communicates effectively with members of the health care team and the patient and involved others.
Participates in a team approach to health care, by acting as a liason between members of the primary care team.
Performs emergency, lifesaving procedures in the presence of life threatening situations such as: cardiac arrest, massive hemorrhage or similar problems. Technical skills include but are not limited to, providing basic life support and advanced life support.
In collaboration with the Attending Physician and other health care providers, coordinates the care of the patient.
Appropriately performs special procedures.
Assists the Orthopaedic Surgeons in the OR, for both inpatient and ambulatory cases.
Performs other duties as necessary.
Attend daily teaching conference and attending rounds.
