Under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), the OB Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing the Delivery and Operating Rooms with necessary equipment, aiding nursing staff, performing patient care activities as delegated by a RN, and maintaining patient care supplies. This role collaborates with the care team in the formation of the patient’s plan of care to achieve desired outcomes for the patient based on physician preference cards, current assessment findings, diagnostic reports, and standards of care/practice. The technologist also prepares and maintains equipment and supplies, prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment, and follows aseptic technique during procedures. They will drape patients, assist the surgical team, communicate safe therapeutic care, and document all care provided in the electronic medical record. Additionally, they assist in room turnover and stocking, maintain a safe environment, and perform patient support duties under the direction of an RN, which may include venipuncture, starting IVs, obtaining vital signs, weights, and blood glucose, collecting specimens, assisting with ambulation, toileting, bathing, and linen changes, inserting foley catheters, assisting with newborn screening, and providing oral feeding and diapering to babies. The role also involves participation in the hospital-wide infection control plan and quality improvement process, demonstrating effective communication, customer service, and team building skills, and performing other duties as assigned.
