About The Position

The Surgical First Assist OR supports surgical procedures in the Main OR at Saint Thomas West in Nashville, Tennessee. The role includes positioning patients for optimal surgical exposure while maintaining comfort and safety, providing visualization of the operative site, assisting with hemostasis and wound closure, and helping prepare and clean the surgical suite.

Requirements

BLS Provider certification obtained within 30 days of hire or job transfer; American Heart Association or American Red Cross credentials are accepted.
One of the following is required before hire or job transfer: Certified First Surgical Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse specializing in First Assistant. Specified certifications are not required for employees hired or transferred before May 30, 2021.
High school diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience, an associate or technical degree, or 4 years of applicable cumulative job-specific experience.

Responsibilities

Position patients to provide the best exposure for the surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
Provide visualization of the operative site through tissue and material manipulation, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.
Use appropriate techniques to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
Assist with body plane closure, wound dressing application, and securing drainage systems.
Assist with OR room cleanup and removal of the soiled case cart, supplies, and trash after surgical cases as needed.
Participate as a surgical team member in preparing the surgical suite according to surgeon preference cards, with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies.
