About The Position

The Surgical Environmental Services Technician is responsible for performing specialized cleaning, disinfection, and preparation of all perioperative areas, including operating rooms, pre/post-operative suites, and sterile core areas. This role also manages the organized distribution and storage of surgical linens and essential supplies.

Requirements

  • Previous cleaning, janitorial, or housekeeping experience preferred, with experience in a healthcare or sterile environment a significant plus.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions precisely.
  • Strong time management skills to handle quick turnovers between cases.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, lift (up to 50 lbs), push, and pull equipment for the duration of the shift.
  • Must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to cleaning chemicals and biohazardous materials (with appropriate PPE).
  • On-the-job training in surgical cleaning, infection control, and proper chemical use will be provided.
  • CSTS Certified- Required. The required CSTS Class and Certification test can be completed at BMH as part of the training period.

Responsibilities

  • Perform thorough cleaning and disinfection of surgical suites before, between, and after procedures following strict departmental and infection control protocols (e.g., AORN guidelines and/or CSTS guidelines). This includes cleaning surgical tables, equipment, lights, scrub sinks, walls, and floors.
  • Safely collect, handle, and dispose of all waste, including general trash, regulated medical waste, and biohazardous materials, adhering to all hospital and regulatory guidelines.
  • Spot clean and maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of all associated areas, such as hallways, locker rooms, storage rooms, and staff lounges within the surgical department.
  • Sort and transport clean surgical linens.
  • Stock blankets into designated warmers.
  • Organize and put away clean scrubs and gowns in locker rooms and storage areas.
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate inventory levels of cleaning supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Report maintenance and repair issues, equipment malfunctions, and any safety hazards immediately to the supervisor.
  • Use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely and correctly.
  • Adhere to all safety and occupational health standards, including the proper use of PPE.
  • Perform any tasks, projects, or actions that are reasonably within the scope of the Employee’s position or employment, which the Employee’s supervisor, any member of BMH’s management, or BMH’s administration team asks of the Employee.
  • Act as professionally as should normally be required in a medical organization, giving all appropriate respect and deference to licensed medical providers and behavioral health providers.
  • Keep all BMH business and patient information strictly confidential and adhere to all other BMH confidentiality policies and procedures, as well as all laws affecting confidentiality.
  • Refrain from intentionally, purposely, knowingly, or negligently engaging in any conduct, actions, or speech that may cause concern, apprehension, confusion, or annoyance on the part of any BMH patient toward BMH as an organization or any BMH employee.
  • Work congenially and cooperatively at all times with all other BMH employees, maintaining a pleasant demeanor and attitude and executing position duties and administration’s/management’s other requests in a timely manner, diligently, and with a positive attitude.
  • Refrain from personally degrading any other person or BMH employee.
  • Refrain from engaging in gossip about any BMH employees and/or patients.
  • Communicate complaints about BMH, its policies, procedures, managers, administrators, and/or other employees only to and through the appropriate BMH channels, which are limited to BMH’s management chain of command.
  • Check the Employee’s BMH email no less frequently than once daily.
  • Absolutely refrain from communicating or releasing any “Private BMH Information” to the media and/or non-BMH persons or entities without formal approval to do the same by BMH’s CEO.
