The AORN Periop 101 Program is a comprehensive, blended learning experience designed to prepare registered nurses who are new to the operating room environment. This 22-week program utilizes a multi-dimensional approach that integrates computer-based learning, instructor-led didactic sessions, and simulation to build both foundational knowledge and clinical competence. Online modules establish the theoretical framework essential for perioperative nursing practice, while structured classroom and simulation experiences reinforce key concepts and promote critical thinking. Hands-on learning is further supported through clinical immersion in the surgical suite, where participants work alongside experienced preceptors to apply skills in real-time patient care scenarios. Each nurse is supported through a customized orientation plan that includes dedicated preceptors and ongoing guidance from the OR Educator and perioperative leadership team, ensuring a well-rounded and supportive transition into the perioperative role. As our surgical services nurse at MGMC you will prepare patients for surgical procedures and assist in the operating room to ensure they receive excellent nursing when they are at their most vulnerable. Every day you will go over consent forms, answer questions about the procedure, do preoperative assessments, make sure the equipment is ready to go, and update family members on the surgery status during the operation. You will be expected to directly assist the surgeon during the actual surgery. To be successful in this role you must have the ability to maintain focus while multitasking, remain calm under pressure, and exercise good judgment in emergency situations.
