About The Position

Surgery Coordinator Humane Society for Hamilton County Starting Pay: $18.00-$23.00 per hour, based on experience Help animals heal. Support lifesaving surgery. Do work that changes outcomes. The Humane Society for Hamilton County is hiring a Surgery Coordinator to support our shelter in providing high-quality surgical and post-operative care for the animals in our care. This role is perfect for someone with veterinary medical experience who is organized, detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and comfortable supporting animals through every stage of the surgery process. If you have experience with clinical surgery, post-operative care, medical recordkeeping, and compassionate animal handling, this is meaningful work with real impact every single day.

Requirements

  • Have veterinary medical experience, including supporting a veterinarian in clinical surgery and post-operative care
  • Have experience with intubation, monitoring vitals, administering IVs, wound care, dentals, emergency triage, euthanasia, and O.R. preparation
  • Can safely handle dogs and cats who may be fearful, reactive, anxious, or fractious
  • Have experience identifying and supporting treatment plans for common medical conditions in dogs and cats
  • Are proficient in medical calculations, including drugs, constant rate infusions, and unit conversions
  • Are highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and compassionately
  • Are comfortable with computers, email, Microsoft Office, PetPoint, Excel, or similar database systems
  • Can multitask, solve problems, and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Are comfortable navigating difficult, stressful, and fast-moving situations
  • Can pivot quickly when unexpected medical or shelter needs arise
  • Are available to work some nights, weekends, holidays, and after-hours emergency rotations
  • Thrive in an environment with animal sounds, smells, allergens, and constant movement
  • Believe in a positive, whatever-it-takes culture
  • Support and embrace a no-kill philosophy

Nice To Haves

  • RVT certification is a plus, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Assist with surgical preparation, intubation, monitoring vitals, administering IVs, wound care, dentals, emergency triage, euthanasia, and O.R. preparation
  • Ensure animals receive proper post-operative care according to veterinarian recommendations and HSHC standards
  • Help create and manage the weekly surgery schedule so animals are altered in a timely manner
  • Prioritize surgeries for animals waiting to go home, enter foster care, or move forward in their lifesaving journey
  • Communicate pre- and post-operative care instructions to staff, medical managers, foster team members, and adopters
  • Schedule adopter pick-up times and review post-operative instructions at discharge
  • Maintain accurate surgery notes, medical records, and follow-up care information in PetPoint
  • Support animals requiring special or critical care, including insulin-dependent animals, animals needing hand feeding, sub-Q fluids, special diets, or other in-house care plans
  • Assist with outsourced veterinary and specialty care cases, including orthopedic, neurology, and other advanced care needs
  • Help keep the surgery suite, operating room, x-ray room, equipment, and surgery laundry clean, organized, and ready for use
  • Support proper handling, tracking, and security of controlled substances in accordance with DEA regulations and HSHC protocols
  • Assist the Medical Department as needed
  • Participate in holiday scheduling and after-hours emergency support
  • Take on additional operational and medical support duties as assigned
