About The Position

Join OHSU’s Enterprise Coding Department as a Level III Professional Fee Coder specializing in Multispecialty Surgery. This telecommuting role focuses on ensuring accurate and compliant coding for a diverse range of surgical services, including General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Dental, Gastroenterology, and Trauma. You will collaborate with coding leadership, providers, and peers, contributing to operational efficiency and continuous improvement within a mission-driven environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience coding hospital or professional services using ICD-10-CM and CPT.
  • Active coding certification through: AAPC (e.g., CPC), or AHIMA (e.g., RHIA, RHIT, CCS), or Equivalent credential.
  • Active membership in AAPC or AHIMA.
  • Successful completion of an internal coding skills assessment.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional fee coding experience in multispecialty surgery, including General Surgery, Plastics, Dental, GI, and Trauma.
  • Completion of an accredited coding program (AAPC or AHIMA Coding Boot Camp).
  • Knowledge of PFS, OPPS, CPT, ICD-10 guidelines, CCI edits, and NCD/LCD policies.
  • Experience with Epic and 3M Encoder.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Coursework in anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, CPT, and ICD-10-CM coding.

Responsibilities

  • Review clinical documentation in Epic and related systems for accuracy and compliance with CMS and payer guidelines.
  • Assign accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes for professional fee services, including E/M, diagnostic, and complex surgical procedures.
  • Code across multiple surgical specialties including General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Dental, GI, and Trauma.
  • Maintain billing and coding workflows for assigned work queues.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance of all coded data.
  • Monitor coding activities for alignment with federal/state regulations and internal policies.
  • Work closely with supervisors and team leads to resolve coding questions and prioritize workflow.
  • Develop and maintain written procedures supporting coding quality and staff education.
  • Serve as a subject-matter resource for surgical coding guidelines, billing policies, and documentation requirements.
  • Actively participate in coding meetings, Enterprise Coding huddles, and educational sessions.
  • Collaborate with leadership to identify documentation improvement opportunities and process enhancements.
  • Review and apply updates from coding publishers and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain certifications and continuing education requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
