About The Position

The Surface Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty haul trucks and support equipment used in surface coal mining operations. This role ensures equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED
2+ years of experience working on heavy equipment or diesel trucks (mining experience preferred)
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and braking systems
Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and diagrams
Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred but not always required)
Basic welding and fabrication skills
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Good communication skills
Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on haul trucks, water trucks, fuel trucks, and light vehicles
Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and manuals
Repair or replace engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, and hydraulic systems
Conduct inspections to identify wear, damage, or safety concerns
Complete work orders and maintenance records accurately and timely
Perform welding and fabrication as needed for repairs
Ensure all equipment meets safety and operational standards before returning to service
Respond to breakdowns in the field when required
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
Follow all MSHA and company safety regulations
Other duties as assigned by management
