About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Support Worker to provide professional care and support to individuals on conditional release from Federal Correctional Institutions. This role involves a full range of duties related to the assistance, care, and case management of residents, including intake assessments, ongoing tracking, logging, and essential communications with the Community Residential Facility Staff Team and Parole Office. Requirements

  • A community college certificate in Human Services, Corrections or equivalent.
  • Acceptance of the Salvation Army Mission Statement.
  • Tolerance and compassion for individuals of diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective conflict resolution and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to intervene effectively in crisis situations and use authority constructively.
  • Experience in a correctional setting.
  • Basic computer skills (Word Processing, Emailing, Network Access).
  • Certification in First Aide/CPR.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Current VSC acceptable to Salvation Army at time of hire and ability to obtain a clear Broad Record Check after hire.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in Case Management Teams through regular meetings and participation in completion and submission of Level of Service Inventory (LSI) and Case Needs Analysis within the first 2 weeks of residents admission.
  • Prepare and distribute Case Notes on individual residents when required.
  • Ensure that the Residence and grounds are maintained in a clean and hygienic manner according to the chore description provided to each resident and take remedial action when required (curfew reductions).
  • Report needed repairs to the Director.
  • Conduct Independent House Check at beginning of shift and minimally two house checks per shift of each room in the facility and account for the presence and safety of all Centre occupants (staff, visitors, and residents), as well as an additional two “Walk Abouts”.
  • Record the information in the log.
  • Maintain the daily logs in the Reception office in a thorough and precise manner noting all persons entering and departing the Centre, any significant contacts with residents, C.S.C personnel, police, and the Director or Designate (whether in person or by telephone), activation and deactivation of alarm and cause, shift change information, etc.
  • Initial residents’ daily itineraries and be sure to verify itineraries prior to resident daily departures to ensure appropriate details are listed.
  • Log all required call-ins and updates into appropriate binders.
  • Answer all incoming telephone calls & ensure all visitors and guests have signed in/out.
  • Complete Shift-Change form and report information at regular Shift-Change meeting to all staff participants.
  • Ensure Count Information is correct and that all important information is passed on to all participants.
  • Confirm accuracy of dot board and make changes when necessary.
  • Complete by Thursday each week: review of weekend pass lists, post lists on pass board, curfew extensions.
  • Keep track of office supplies.
  • Print out weekend spot check lists and post on clip board.
  • Complete a bi-weekly inventory of all cleaning and food supplies on Tuesdays, replenishing when needed, ordering no later than Wednesday.
  • Create new chore lists monthly (taking into consideration resident health issues, work schedules and length of residency time).
  • Conduct room searches of men's belongings whenever requested by Director or designate.
  • Maintain all residents' files in a complete and organized fashion.
  • Perform any other duties deemed necessary by the Director or Designate to fulfill contractual obligations to Correctional Services Canada.
  • Discharge responsibilities in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.
