About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is a ministry of service with nearly 400 paid, professional employees dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Founded locally in 1911, VOA-NCNN is one of the largest providers of social services in the region, operating more than 40 programs including housing, employment services, substance abuse, and recovery services to families, individuals, veterans, seniors, and youth. VOA-NCNN provides shelter or housing to over 3,500 men, women, and children every night. Our mission is to change individual lives, instill hope, increase self-worth and facilitate independence through quality housing, employment, and related supportive services. VOA, a Certified Great Place to Work, is recruiting to fill a full-time, overnight Support Staff position for the Nottoli Place team in Sacramento, CA. This program provides shelter for up to 15 seniors age 62 or older who are struggling with homelessness, offering case management and housing assistance with the goal of moving guests into independent living. The Overnight schedule is 12:00 am - 08:00 am.

Requirements

  • A High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, seniors, minorities, and persons with disabilities.
  • Must be able to utilize a range of interventions to work with clients with varying needs and levels of functioning.
  • Must have the flexibility to work irregular hours.
  • Must be able to function both independently and in a team environment.
  • Tact, discretion, and resourcefulness are required at all times.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Requires CPR and First Aid training within ninety (90) days of employment, re-certification as necessary, and T.B. testing annually.

Nice To Haves

  • Specific knowledge and experience with the housing first approach, addiction and recovery, and dysfunctional family dynamics are preferred.
  • A valid California driver’s license and the ability to meet the organization's insurance carrier guidelines are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for performing daily work requirements to achieve established objectives of the program.
  • Ongoing source of engagement, information sharing, and problem-solving for clients using trauma-informed, strength-based, compassionate, and professional approaches.
  • Explain program requirements and regulations to new clients and assure compliance.
  • Continually reorients clients to rules, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, room assignments, and other daily routines.
  • Provide “awake” shift coverage and maintain campus security and safety at all times, indoors and outdoors.
  • Provide emergency assistance to clients and co-workers as necessary.
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed, i.e., change light bulbs, plunge toilet, clean up accidents/messes, etc.
  • Prepare for new clients, including sanitizing beds and sleeping areas.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing all common areas, including restrooms and laundry, and staff areas, both indoors and outside.
  • Assures toiletry and cleaning supplies are stocked and secured.
  • Address any behavior issues that create disharmony, criminal, or otherwise non-productive behavior.
  • De-escalate crisis before it develops and respond to the situation in an appropriate manner.
  • Takes pertinent client issues to the Program Director.
  • Role model positive and professional behavior, including appearance, and communication with others.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain daily reports to provide statistical information.
  • Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
  • Document and notify management of client concerns, potential workflow problems, and/or any exceptions to policies that can affect program security or safety.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and accomplish program objectives.
  • Assist in department orientation and training of new employees as requested to assure quality work outcomes.
  • Identify ongoing training for new and existing staff and report needs to management.
  • Serve as part of the program development team by providing information and support for developing quality operations.
  • Maintain an above-average working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards to ensure a safe work environment for clients and all personnel.
  • Continually learn and enhance technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Attend staff meetings/assigned training and complete required certifications, i.e., CPR, First Aid, etc.
