About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives. Founded in 1911, VOA-NCNN operates over 40 programs focused on housing, employment, substance abuse, and recovery services for various populations. The organization provides shelter or housing to over 3,500 individuals nightly. VOA-NCNN is a Certified Great Place to Work and is recruiting for a full-time, overnight Support Staff position for the Nottoli Place team in Sacramento, CA. This program provides shelter for up to 15 seniors aged 62 or older who are experiencing homelessness, offering case management and housing assistance with the goal of transitioning them into independent living. The overnight shift is from 12:00 am to 08:00 am. Full-time employees working 30 or more hours per week are eligible for benefits.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, seniors, minorities, and persons with disabilities.
  • Must be able to utilize a range of interventions to work with clients with varying needs and levels of functioning.
  • Must have the flexibility to work irregular hours.
  • Must be able to function both independently and in a team environment.
  • Tact, discretion, and resourcefulness are required at all times.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Requires CPR and First Aid training within ninety (90) days of employment, re-certification as necessary, and T.B. testing annually.
  • Must undergo a criminal background check.
  • Teamwork skills.
  • Ability to de-escalate crises and assist clients and staff in emergencies.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to assist other people compassionately while maintaining professionalism.

Nice To Haves

  • Specific knowledge and experience with the housing first approach, addiction and recovery, and dysfunctional family dynamics are preferred.
  • A valid California driver’s license and the ability to meet the organization's insurance carrier guidelines are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assure quality service to all program clients compassionately and professionally as it relates to specific program objectives.
  • Provide supportive interaction with program clients and team members.
  • Assess client needs and perform all work duties as required in a cost-effective and service-oriented manner.
  • Perform daily work requirements to achieve established program objectives.
  • Serve as an ongoing source of engagement, information sharing, and problem-solving for clients using trauma-informed, strength-based, compassionate, and professional approaches.
  • Explain program requirements and regulations to new clients and assure compliance.
  • Continually reorient clients to rules, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, room assignments, and other daily routines.
  • Provide "awake" shift coverage and maintain campus security and safety at all times, indoors and outdoors.
  • Provide emergency assistance to clients and co-workers as necessary.
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Prepare for new clients, including sanitizing beds and sleeping areas.
  • Clean and sanitize all common areas, including restrooms, laundry, and staff areas, both indoors and outside.
  • Ensure toiletry and cleaning supplies are stocked and secured.
  • Address any behavior issues that create disharmony, criminal, or otherwise non-productive behavior.
  • De-escalate crises before they develop and respond to situations appropriately.
  • Take pertinent client issues to the Program Director.
  • Role model positive and professional behavior, including appearance and communication.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain daily reports to provide statistical information.
  • Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
  • Document and notify management of client concerns, potential workflow problems, and/or any exceptions to policies that can affect program security or safety.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and accomplish program objectives.
  • Assist in department orientation and training of new employees as requested.
  • Identify ongoing training needs for new and existing staff and report them to management.
  • Serve as part of the program development team by providing information and support for developing quality operations.
  • Maintain an above-average working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards.
  • Continually learn and enhance technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Attend staff meetings/assigned training and complete required certifications.
