About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is seeking a full-time Support Staff member for its Meadowview Navigation Center in Sacramento. This center provides a safe haven for women experiencing homelessness, many of whom are victims of violence. In partnership with the City of Sacramento and the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, the center offers a secure environment for up to 100 women to escape the elements and heal from trauma. VOA-NCNN is a Certified Great Place to Work and a ministry of service dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Founded in 1911, VOA-NCNN is a leading provider of social services in the region, operating over 40 programs focused on housing, employment, substance abuse, and recovery for diverse populations.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions.

  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, women, minorities, and persons with disabilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Specific knowledge and experience with the Twelve Step philosophy, mental illness, addiction and recovery, and dysfunctional family dynamics are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing engagement, information sharing, and problem-solving for guests using a trauma-informed, strength-based, compassionate, and professional approach.
  • Explain program requirements and regulations to new guests and ensure compliance.
  • Continually reorient guests to rules, rights, and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, room assignments, and other daily routines.
  • Provide "awake" shift coverage and maintain grounds security and safety at all times, indoor and outdoor.
  • Provide emergency assistance to guests and co-workers as necessary.
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Prepare for new guests, including sanitizing beds and sleeping areas.
  • Clean and sanitize all common areas, restrooms, laundry areas, and staff areas.
  • Ensure toiletry and cleaning supplies are stocked and secured.
  • Address behavior issues that create disharmony, criminal, or otherwise non-productive behavior.
  • Use de-escalation techniques as needed.
  • Escalate pertinent guest issues to the Case Management team.
  • Serve as a positive role model with professional behavior, appearance, and communication.
  • Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
  • Document and notify management of guest concerns, potential workflow problems, and/or any exceptions to policy that can affect program security or safety.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and accomplish program objectives.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards.
  • Verify the identity of individuals entering or exiting the premises.
  • Maintain accurate records of client entries and departures.
  • Use handheld metal detectors (wanding) to ensure no weapons are brought onto the premises.
  • Follow strict protocols for handling suspicious items or individuals.
  • Conduct thorough searches of bags and personal belongings.
  • Ensure prohibited items, such as drugs or paraphernalia, are not brought in.
  • Identify and store items prohibited in the shelter.
  • Operate security cameras and monitor activity to ensure the safety of shelter guests and staff.
  • Report and respond to any signs of breaches or misconduct.
  • Coordinate with staff to ensure swift response to medical situations.
  • Facilitate clear and efficient communication between involved parties during medical emergencies.
  • Assist in de-escalating verbal or physical altercations to maintain the safety of all community members.
  • Use de-escalation skills to diffuse tense situations without compromising security.
  • Contact emergency personnel, such as EMS, Fire, or law enforcement, when necessary.
  • Document incidents and actions taken during emergencies; log first responder information.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
