About The Position

The NV Cares Campus is seeking Full-Time Support Staff for the overnight shift (11:00 PM to 7:00 AM). This role is crucial for providing a safe and supportive environment for men and women experiencing homelessness in the Reno area. The Nevada Cares Campus, in partnership with Washoe County, offers emergency shelter for up to 600 adult individuals and couples, allowing clients to bring their pets and possessions while accessing support services and case management. As a Certified Great Place to Work, Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is a ministry of service dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. Founded in 1911, VOA-NCNN is one of the largest providers of social services in the region, operating over 40 programs focused on housing, employment, and substance abuse recovery.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide services to participants without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, young adults, minorities, and persons with disabilities.
  • Ability to utilize a range of interventions to work with participants with varying needs and levels of functioning.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours.
  • Willingness to function as a team member.
  • Computer skills required.
  • CPR and First Aid training within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • T.B. testing annually.
  • Undergo a criminal background check.

  • Ability to de-escalate crises and assist residents and staff in emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Assure quality service in a safe, non-judgmental manner to all program participants compassionately and professionally as it relates to the specific program objectives.
  • Provide supportive interaction with program participants and team members.
  • Assess participant’s needs.
  • Support the safety and integrity of all residents.
  • Perform all work duties as required in a cost-effective and service-oriented manner as it relates to established organizational standards.
  • Explain program rules and regulations to residents and facilitate participant observance of the rules.
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, bed/sleeping assignments, showers, laundering, and other daily routines.
  • Provide “awake” shift coverage and maintain ground security, conducting hourly safety and security checks.
  • De-escalate crises and respond to situations appropriately, providing emergency assistance as necessary.
  • Maintain daily reports to provide statistical information.
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed, ensuring dorm areas meet health/sanitation requirements.
  • Respond to all participant questions and concerns.
  • Perform clerical duties on shift, including answering the telephone, recording messages, and filing.
  • Maintain clear, thorough, routine communication with all participants.
  • Coordinate and inventory all participant property brought into the Nevada Cares Campus.
  • Provide participant property as requested and manage the storage of discarded or left property.
  • Post removal notices for unattended belongings and bicycles.
  • Maintain safety and security of property at all times.
  • Document and report all client concerns and/or infractions that can impact the program’s security.
  • Oversee and maintain proper linen documentation and inventory control, and assist participants with replacements.
  • Oversee restrooms/showers and laundry facilities.
  • Complete all shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports.
  • Monitor program equipment and supplies inventory and take appropriate action to replace or restock.
  • Notify management of potential workflow problems and resource needs.
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and accomplish program objectives.
  • Communicate with on-site program staff, Shelter Supervisor, service providers, and external county/state/city program representatives.
  • Direct available resources as required.
  • Comprehend and adhere to ethical standards, program philosophy guidelines, and confidentiality laws.
  • Assist with department orientation and training of new employees as requested.
  • Identify ongoing training needs for new and existing staff and report to management.
  • Serve as part of the program development team by providing information and support for developing quality operations.
  • Maintain an above-average working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards.
  • Process participant mail, including dating, sorting, and forwarding.
  • Assist participants with signing up for mail service and assign mail slots.
  • Distribute mail daily to participants, staff, and agencies.
  • Support VOA Staff in implementing plans to assist residents in successfully completing the program.
  • Notify VOA Staff and Washoe County Case Management Staff of pertinent participant issues.
  • Role model positive behavior to help clients work towards self-sufficiency.
  • Continually learn and enhance technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Attend staff meetings/assigned training and complete required certifications (CPR, First Aid).
