About The Position

The field of human services provides meaningful work where you know your contributions directly impact and support an individual’s well-being while fostering more inclusive communities. Calgary Alternative Support Services (CASS) recognizes its employees as its greatest asset and seeks to recruit and mentor human service professionals with talent and commitment for disability advocacy and community engagement. This role involves supporting clients in their homes, assisting with daily living activities, and potentially sharing living space. The supports provided typically occur in the mornings, evenings, and weekends, but may also include daytime support depending on the client's schedule. This position is classified as a contractor and is not an employee, meaning benefits like vacation time, health benefits, or employment insurance contributions are not provided. However, the income is tax-free and not subject to CPP or EI contributions, though it must be declared annually. SHPs are selected based on education, availability, suitability, expertise, and the safety and suitability of their home and location.

Requirements

  • Maintains and utilizes current Emergency or Standard First Aid that includes CPR/AED
  • A current police information check with a vulnerable sectors search that is satisfactory to CASS

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge in supporting adults with developmental disabilities preferred
  • Diploma or equivalent experience in Disability Studies
  • A vehicle and valid driver's license is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support in all activities of daily living, including laundry, housekeeping, making and attending medical appointments, administering medications, planning and preparing healthy meals, budgeting, and recreation and leisure.
  • Provide support in the mornings, evenings, and weekends, and potentially during the day if the client does not have a day program, employment, or scheduled activities.
  • Support clients in their homes based on education, availability, suitability, and level of expertise with specific support requirements.
  • Ensure the safety and suitability of the physical home and the area of the city.
