About The Position

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) is seeking to fill two term positions for a Support Early Childhood Educator (SECE) at Dr. J.C. Wickwire Academy. The SECE will support the Lead Early Childhood Educator (LECE) within the Pre-primary Program Team to ensure a supportive and secure environment for young children. This role involves assisting in the creation and maintenance of an engaging learning environment that encourages exploration and knowledge acquisition through experiences and social interactions. The SECE will utilize evidence-based practices and professional judgment to focus on the holistic development and well-being of the children, supporting the implementation of the Pre-primary Program using the Nova Scotia Early Learning Curriculum Framework. The SECE will be an active member of the school team, reporting to the Pre-primary Facilitator, and will work cooperatively with the LECE to ensure consistent delivery and assessment of a high-quality early learning experience. The SECE may also act in the place of the LECE as necessary.

Requirements

ECE Level 2 (2-year Early Childhood Education Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution) or 3 (Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from a recognized post-secondary institution) is preferred; SECE can be Level 1 or school-age approval but must agree to commence work towards an ECE Level 2 or 3 credential.
Valid standard First Aid training.
Satisfactory Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks.
A minimum of 3 years of recent experience with pre-school aged children.
Experience with developmentally appropriate observation, documentation and authentic assessment strategies.
Experience working with children and families with diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, and developmental needs.
In-depth understanding of child growth and development.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience using a play-based pedagogy and child-centered, developmentally appropriate practices.
Ability to translate theory and best practices into action in early childhood settings.
Ability to create inclusive and responsive early learning environments that support the diverse and special needs of all children.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Proficient computer skills suitable for report writing and internet research/applications.

Responsibilities

Support the Lead Early Childhood Educator (LECE) in ensuring a supportive and secure environment for young children.
Assist the LECE in creating and maintaining an engaging learning environment.
Support the use of evidenced-based practices and professional judgment for the holistic development and well-being of children.
Support the implementation of the Pre-primary Program using the Nova Scotia Early Learning Curriculum Framework.
Act as an active member of the school team, reporting to the Pre-primary Facilitator.
Work cooperatively with the LECE to support consistent delivery and assessment of a high-quality early learning experience.
Act in the place of the LECE as necessary.
Create an active and dynamic learning environment that supports and includes all children.
Work with the LECE to clarify roles and responsibilities, establish classroom routines and procedures.
Deliver developmentally appropriate and engaging programming responsive to children's interests and cultural needs.
Observe, assess, and document children’s developmental progress.
Facilitate family, caregiver, and community involvement in the program.
Maintain open communication with families and caregivers regarding their children's experiences and the program.
Reflect children’s lives in ongoing displays and celebrations.
Provide timely identification of and responses to children and families needing additional supports and services.
Partner with community-based providers to ensure children’s individual developmental needs are addressed.
Support the LECE in writing transition plans for children requiring additional supports for primary entry.
Support children’s development with materials and resources focusing on emergent literacy, numeracy, play-based skills, social-emotional skills, and gross and fine motor development.
Demonstrate understanding of young children’s characteristics, needs, and the influences on their development and learning.
Implement appropriate behavior guidance strategies for young children in consideration of Regional and EECD policies and procedures.
Collaborate with the LECE to ensure pre-primary students are welcomed and integrated into the school community.
Provide nutritious snacks using knowledge of food and nutrition guidelines.
Support the LECE in the day-to-day management of the classroom, including organizing daily programming, student supports, special events, and extra-curricular activities.
Participate in a comprehensive, ongoing evaluation of the Pre-primary program via the Continuous Quality Improvement process.
Comply with OHS regulations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
