Supplier Industrialization Engineer, Mechanical Components

Redwood Materials•San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Redwood Materials is seeking a Supplier Industrialization Engineer to scale mechanical commodity suppliers—including suppliers of stampings, busbars, harnesses, and CNC-machined components—in support of production ramps for its energy generation product. This fully onsite role is based at the San Francisco R&D Space and requires 30% international travel to supplier sites. The engineer ensures supplier-provided parts meet dimensional, functional, and reliability requirements. The role supports supplier capacity analysis, process approvals, part qualifications, new product introduction (NPI) builds, supplier performance management, and audits. The successful candidate will work closely with Supply Chain, Engineering, Finance, and Manufacturing in a dynamic, fast-paced environment to meet design and customer-success targets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, Economics, or an equivalent technical background.
  • At least 3 years of experience in supplier quality, industrial engineering, process controls, or a related area.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical fabrication processes, including CNC machining, casting, injection molding, extrusion, sheet metal, riveting, welding, and plating.
  • Familiarity with PCBA manufacturing processes, including SMT, through-hole wave and selective soldering, reflow oven profiles, and test strategies.
  • Proficiency in reading engineering drawings and applying GD&T.
  • Familiarity with dimensional metrology tools and methods, including CMM, calipers, and gauges, as well as statistical process control.
  • Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, SPC, DFMEA/PFMEA, and ISO quality systems.
  • Collaborative, data-driven, and proactive approach, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Willingness to travel internationally to supplier sites as needed; travel is approximately 30%.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, or Supply Chain, and/or an MBA.
  • Experience in automotive, industrial hardware, or high-volume electronics manufacturing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Support process, system, and product supplier audits and risk assessments to qualify new sources and confirm readiness for mass production.
  • Partner with global supply managers (GSMs), Design Engineering, and suppliers to align specifications, tolerance stack-ups, test coverage, and process controls.
  • Review dimensional and quality reports, first article inspections, and process-control data to verify part compliance.
  • Execute PPAP and FAI activities and help define incoming inspection criteria based on part criticality, GD&T, and critical-to-quality characteristics.
  • Support supplier non-conformance resolution, drive 8D investigations, and verify the effectiveness of corrective actions with vendors.
  • Maintain supplier scorecards using KPIs such as yield, PPM, delivery performance, and DFM responsiveness.
  • Support NPI builds and DFM/DFA feedback loops through early supplier engagement and pilot-line walkthroughs.
  • Help develop a capable vendor network with robust processes, technical capability, reliability, and capacity.
  • Support make-versus-buy, dual-sourcing, and localization efforts across global supply chains.
  • Contribute to sourcing decisions, lead-time analysis, and manufacturing-footprint strategies.
  • Support suppliers through detailed capacity analysis, process approvals, part qualifications, NPI builds, ongoing performance reviews, and audits.
