About The Position

Oversees student learning activities in the Tutoring and Academic Success Center (TASC): designs, pilots, implements, coordinates, and assesses individual and group tutoring, study coaching, supplemental instruction initiatives, workshop programs, and developmental skills labs. This person engages with a large number of students every day, teaching and reinforcing the skills and strategies to help students become independent and active learners, while providing content specific support. This person develops, organizes, updates, and maintains relevant study materials, coordinates TASC learning initiatives with the TASC team, faculty, course coordinators, or Department Chairs. This staff member will tutor life and physical sciences such as biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, and other subject areas as assigned. This position will primarily be at the Bradenton campus but may also have regular duty assignments at other campuses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from four-year college, or university and one or more years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Maintains expert knowledge in one or more academic area (Math, English, or Science).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to perform calculations on standard measures of American currency and weight, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram/chart, or schedule form.
  • Intermediate knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, internet and e-mail.
  • Additional knowledge of discipline specific software.
  • Must be proficient in current College e-mail, database and other College required software.
  • Must remain current with technology changes.
  • Responsibility for routine maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Performs work as “lead” employee for laboratory staff and students.
  • Internal Contacts: Routine contact with faculty and instructional administrative and support staff; frequent contact with students.
  • External Contacts: Occasional contact with vendors; frequent contact with prospective students, general public, and professionals appropriate for discipline.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use manual dexterity and talk or hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience tutoring and/or teaching college students is preferred.
  • Must have “expert knowledge” in one of the academic fields supported through the TASC: demonstrable knowledge of college level math (algebra, trigonometry and either statistics or calculus) or college level science (at least two of the following: biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy & physiology), or college level English.
  • One or more years of experience as a “lead” employee, with responsibility for scheduling and assigning work, training new employees, and assisting others with problems.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, implements, coordinates, and assesses the success of: tutoring, study coaching, and supplemental instruction initiatives.
  • Develop study and review materials for use in these initiatives.
  • Serves as a resource person for the peer tutors (student tutors).
  • Mentor and trains new student tutors.
  • Develops and maintains the tutor training manual and training materials.
  • Tutor students individually who request assistance.
  • Presents TASC orientations to students and faculty and represents the TASC at college events.
  • Designs and implements individualized student development activities on a case-by-case basis to help students achieve academic improvement consistent with their goals, values, interests, and abilities.
  • Supervises the operation of the TASC during evening and weekend hours, as required when the Lab Manager is not present.
  • Ensures that all staff and students contribute to a productive study atmosphere in the TASC.
  • Keeps current on changing professional practices and the growing use of instructional technologies.
  • Learns, manages, implements, and trains in the use of current study skills and academic software platforms, learning management systems, printing systems, etc.
  • Instructs staff and students in their appropriate use.
  • Troubleshoots common issues.
  • Conducts workshops on demand.
  • Coordinates with students and faculty to incorporate material that addresses the needs of the students.
  • Develops workshop materials, prepares presentations, and utilizes a variety of instructional approaches as appropriate for an academically diverse population.
  • Works collaboratively with other TASC staff members to ensure smooth operation of the TASC: organizes and updates inventories and usage records, maintains and troubleshoots student use computers and printers, report equipment in need of repair, participates in selection of learning resource materials and other supplies for purchase, open and close the facility as needed.
  • Perform other tasks or duties as assigned.
