About The Position

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support service targeting historically challenging courses. SI Leaders coordinate peer-assisted sessions to help students develop a greater understanding of course material and gain a better grasp of the course itself. SI aims to integrate the 'what to learn' with the 'how to learn,' emphasizing study skills and model student behavior alongside course content. These sessions are not remedial but enhance the material covered in traditional classroom meetings.

Requirements

  • Must have knowledge of their content area.
  • Must have a recommendation from a professor teaching the course.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with students, professors, and learning support staff.
  • Must be willing to lead group discussion and consider study skills.
  • Must be organized to work with setting sessions with students, as well as meeting with professors and the SI coordinator.
  • Must be enrolled as a student at Belmont University.
  • Must have taken the particular subject they are assisting.
  • Must have an instructor recommendation for that course.

Nice To Haves

  • Does not need to have an education background, but must be willing to lead group discussion and consider study skills

Responsibilities

  • Attend all course meetings and model good student behavior (by taking notes, reading material, etc).
  • Create content for 2-3 out of class sessions per week (totaling 3 hours) that review course material and show application of various learning strategies.
  • May hold extra sessions in preparation for exam time.
  • Coordinate aforementioned sessions and communicate them to the classes they cover.
  • Hold office hours (totaling 3 hours per week) where students can ask questions and where leaders can plan for SI sessions.
  • Attend biweekly meetings with the SI supervisor to go over different study strategies, train, and review how sessions are going.
  • Attend biweekly meetings with professors to review major topics to cover and provide feedback about students’ difficulties.
  • Create occasional video content for their respective discipline.
  • Collect data for evaluating the SI program.
