About The Position

This Supervisory Physician (Pathology) position is located at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware. The physician supervises the Forensic Pathology division and its medical and technical staff, directs division operations and casework, and performs and leads complex forensic autopsies and death investigations. The role also provides expert consultation to military commanders, legal counsel, and criminal investigators, and expert testimony in legal proceedings. The position requires a pre-employment physical examination and annual examinations thereafter to confirm continued fitness to perform the duties.

Applicants must meet the physician education, licensure, graduate training, and pathology residency requirements. Salary negotiation may be available to candidates new to Federal service, and a recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. Requirements

• U.S. citizenship.
• Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent degree meeting the stated accreditation or foreign-education equivalency requirements.
• Current, active, full, and unrestricted physician license or registration from a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
• At least one year of supervised direct-service experience in a clinical setting after obtaining the medical degree, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program at an accredited institution.
• Successful completion of accredited residency training in Pathology and equivalent experience and training equal to at least four years; experience may not substitute for required residency training.
• Must complete a pre-employment physical examination and annual examinations thereafter.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and leads medical and technical staff, managing daily operations, evaluating performance, resolving conflicts, and overseeing hiring and training.
• Directs the Forensic Pathology division’s mission by establishing priorities, providing technical guidance, and ensuring the quality and timeliness of casework.
• Performs and leads complex forensic autopsies and death investigations to determine cause and manner of death, particularly in sensitive or difficult cases.
• Provides expert consultation to military commanders, legal counsel, and criminal investigators on forensic pathology matters and investigation outcomes.
• Provides expert medical testimony in legal proceedings, explaining and defending complex autopsy findings to courts and legal authorities.
• Ensures compliance with professional accreditation standards by managing quality assurance programs and conducting peer reviews of casualty and autopsy reports.
• Completes a pre-employment physical examination and annual examinations thereafter to ensure the required physical health and fitness for the duties.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
