About The Position

The U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts represents the entire state and its 6.8 million residents. Of the 94 U.S. Attorneys' Offices throughout the United States and its territories, the District of Massachusetts is one of the busiest, prosecuting a broad range of cases including national security, white collar crime, public corruption, cybercrime, narcotics and money laundering, organized crime and gang violence, and civil rights violations. This position is also being announced to applicants under Merit Staffing procedures under 26-MA-13071224-MP. This Supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist provides significant assistance in the planning, training, and coordinating the work for most of the legal support team, consisting of Paralegal Specialists, Legal Administrative Specialists, and Legal Assistants. If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing Supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist support in the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Massachusetts, located in Boston, Massachusetts, focusing in the areas of Paralegal support and legal research. Typical work assignments will include: Serve as the Deputy Supervisor of the Criminal Division's legal support staff, working with the supervisory Legal Administrative Specialist to provide first level supervisory duties. Plan and organize work projects and assignments to be accomplished by subordinates. Assess, monitor, and alter the workload of each member of the legal support staff based on potential or need. Identify the developmental and training needs of staff. Perform legal research and writing in support of criminal case work. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.
  • To qualify at the GS-11 level, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service performing (obtained in either the public or private sectors) at least 3 out of the following 4 duties: Assisting attorneys and legal support staff in organizing case information; Managing discovery in a variety of formats, such as paper, PDF files, image files, audio files, video files, forensic reports, proprietary files, or other electronic file types; Providing administrative and technical legal expertise or training/mentorship to support staff; Analyzing complex litigation support requirements, such as document and evidence management or trial preparation, to develop or recommend strategies to meet litigation needs.
  • OR A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M., in a related field (e.g., Paralegal studies, Legal studies, Criminal Justice, or Business Administration), from an accredited college or university that provided the knowledge skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position.
  • OR A combination of the above described graduate education and specialized experience. Only graduate level education in excess of the first two years can be used in this calculation. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate level hours that exceed 36 semester hours (or your school's definition of two years of graduate study), then divide the total number of your excess graduate semester hours by 18 (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study). To calculate your percentage of specialized experience, divide the total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%. (You must submit your college transcripts.)
