Requirements

  • 4-7 years design experience in the Utility industry or equivalent external experience
  • 2-3 years internal supervisory experience or receive acceptable rating on Supervisory Assessment
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Broad knowledge of company, department policies, objectives, strategies, and goals; applicable governmental laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communication skills (at levels of the organization), consensus building, establishing and maintaining trust, driving execution and multi-tasking, fostering culture change.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to supervise, influence and execute with a sense of urgency and in an environment of constant change and competing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and provide leadership and supervision of employees and activities of designers.
  • Manage design activities under the technical guidance of the design manager and provide employee performance evaluations.
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to accepted standard engineering and design practices for facility relocation, capacity expansion, and reliability programs for Utility assets.
  • Ensure all designs meet the design basis for equipment and systems on the Utility's system.
  • Identify training requirements and ensure compliance.
  • Define and initiate continuous improvement processes to ensure projects are designed and built to established standards.
  • Oversee design completion, resource coordination, and timely execution of reliability and capacity expansion programs.
  • Communicate, execute, and supervise the process to ensure all design packages are properly prepared and appropriately scoped prior to construction issuance.
  • Ensure consistent application of design practices across the system and coordinate feedback on required design and standards application changes.
  • Responsible for the development and training of the internal design staff and management of the design department budget.
  • Provide supervision and direction to diverse and/or specialized disciplines of functions with significant operational or financial impact.
  • Make decisions on engineering design activities impacting the department and Utility Company operations.
  • Ensure adherence to company standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Enforce all applicable company, city, state, and federal safety rules and regulations.
  • Evaluate performance of department employees, establishing standards, monitoring, and auditing.
  • Counsel and coach for improved performance.
  • Supervise the scheduling of work with Work Management and monitor work schedules.
  • Facilitate and coordinate necessary training for the department and foster a continuous learning attitude.
  • Provide leadership and development of team members, including performance feedback, planning, and appraisals.
  • Manage the design department budget and design contractor interface.
  • Develop and maintain a high-performance culture and a learning organization.
  • Foster an environment that respects and promotes diversity and inclusion.
  • Serve as a change agent for business initiatives and assure the human element is understood and considered.
  • Develop methods to assess communication effectiveness and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage a workforce of approximately 17 designers/drafters responsible for generating and modifying engineering drawings, selecting and approving materials, developing standard design practices, and construction standards.
  • Responsible for employee performance appraisals.
  • Direct and/or indirectly supervise a contract workforce for specialty projects or when work exceeds department capability.
  • Provide technical support for transmission and substation materials, design, maintenance, and construction standards, and regulatory codes.
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain key interfaces with Engineering Work Management.
  • Support transmission and substation engineering projects and initiatives.
  • Manage department actions for efficient design, construction, and maintenance of the transmission and substation system.
  • Work extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.

  • Annual salary will vary based on a candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, and other factors: $98,400.00/Yr. – $135,300.00/Yr.
