About The Position

The P MV VEGETATION MANAGEMENT Department of the P OPERATIONS PLANNING & CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. This role is a Professional Supervisor. The job function is to plan, direct, manage, and control the functions and activities of HECO's system-wide vegetation management program to ensure cost-effective and safe service reliability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in engineering, business, forestry, horticulture, arboriculture, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of construction contract administration, planning, management and negotiations, normally acquired through college-level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Good working knowledge of budgeting and forecasting.
  • Thorough knowledge of electric utility transmission and distribution construction, maintenance and operations.
  • Good working knowledge of federal, state, and local statutes and regulations related to construction and vegetation management activities.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
  • Ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive issues while using tact, courtesy and discretion.
  • Good interpersonal skills to influence, motivate, and persuade various groups or individuals.
  • Supervisory/leadership skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals occasionally dealing with sensitive, difficult or confrontational issue.
  • In-depth analytical and computational skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to conceptualize new ideas quickly.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for State of Hawaii driver’s license and HECO driver’s license in order to travel to various field sites to inspect and monitor operations.
  • Must be willing and able to be transported by helicopter.
  • Several (3-5) years experience in vegetation management functions, preferably utility vegetation management.
  • Several (3-5) years experience of supervisory experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Few years (1-2) of active, hands-on experience in tree trimming and care, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs and monitors the functions and activities of the Vegetation Management Program and its personnel in the contracting and management of vegetation contract services and management of system-wide Vegetation Management Program (S/VMP).
  • Includes administrative functions such as preparing performance appraisals, conducting interviews, reviewing time cards, employee recognition, disciplinary action, and safety.
  • Implements the priorities for the program.
  • Helps develop, implements and administers program policies and procedures to support departmental and corporate policies/strategies.
  • Provides the internal and external communications leadership and is responsible for achieving Company goals and objectives for the program.
  • Helps develop and implements processes to measure and improve productivity of the VM program.
  • Assists in the development, monitoring and analyzing program’s annual operating budget and data.
  • Implements processes, controls and audit trails to control contractor invoicing and forecasting of monthly/annual costs.
  • Serves as the Company’s representative in developing and maintaining relationships with community and government groups (Outdoor Circle, DLNR, City Parks, BWS, Community Associations, etc.).
  • Helps to provide oral and written testimony for legislative, PUC and other hearings.
  • Helps develops, implements, and conducts informational programs relating to HECO’s S/VMP for company employees, customers, the general public, and government.
  • Performs the duties of the System Arborist position as required.
  • Assists in the facilitation of communications between Departments and Company work groups to foster teamwork and coordination.
  • Helps to research, maintain and analyze economic and productivity data and develops, implements and evaluates alternative methods for line clearance and vegetation management.
  • Responds to callouts and/or other emergencies.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
