Provides operational and technical leadership for the Chemistry section to ensure efficient workflow, regulatory compliance, quality outcomes, and effective team performance in support of laboratory operations and patient care. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biological Sciences, or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive laboratory experience in Clinical Chemistry
  • Current certification as Medical Technologist or equivalent certification through ASCP or other recognized accrediting body required (or certification eligibility, if applicable)

Responsibilities

  • Under the Medical Director and Lab Leadership, supervises the day-to-day operations of the Chemistry section to ensure efficient workflow, timely and accurate results, and continuity of service.
  • Provides direct supervision to assigned staff, including scheduling, time-off approvals, performance management, coaching, counseling, employee development, and participation in recruitment and selection activities.
  • Facilitates effective communication across the department through regular staff meetings, huddles, and collaboration with internal stakeholders to support operational alignment and team engagement.
  • Institutes and/or conducts procedures (i.e., reference range verification, linearity studies, assay calibration requirements) to ensure departmental compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards. Supports quality improvement initiatives, monitors compliance activities, and participates in audits and corrective action planning as needed.
  • Leads and supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of departmental workflows, systems, procedures, and operational processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and service delivery. This will include continuous review of section-specific events and the documentation and correction of all non-conforming events within section.
  • Maintains subject matter expertise and technical competency in Clinical Chemistry operations and serves as technical resource to staff and clinical partners. Responsible for troubleshooting operational and technical issues and supporting resolution.
  • Is responsible for the section’s technical competency program to include staff onboarding, technical training, competency assessments, and ongoing education to ensure staff maintain required knowledge, skills, and regulatory competencies.
  • Monitors departmental inventory, supply utilization, vendor service coordination, and budget-related activities to support efficient resource management and operational goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Oversees supports or delegates the maintenance of the LIS database.
  • Provides Lab leadership with pertinent information to prepare capital equipment & operating budgets.
  • Maintains and models the organization’s values.
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
