About The Position

The Supervisor - Surface provides frontline leadership for the safe, compliant, stable, and cost-effective operation of surface haulage, TSF capping/IBWR placement, and surface water systems. The Supervisor converts the approved one-week plan established by the General Foreman - Concentrator into daily shift assignments, directs operators, monitors haulage conditions, coordinates equipment access, and sets operating priorities. The role includes leading safety activities, maintaining field presence, communicating shift plans and hazards, assigning and coaching operators, and directing surface operating activities. The Supervisor works with operators and cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues, manage work sequencing, monitor environmental controls, document operational impacts, and support process optimization and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working under mine or industrial safety, environmental, energy-isolation, and operating-procedure requirements.
  • Experience using standard office software and electronic production-reporting or process-control systems.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead employees, set clear expectations, coach performance, and gain cooperation across varied experience and technical backgrounds.
  • Ability to make timely, risk-informed decisions, select appropriate actions, and escalate issues when technical support or higher authority is required.
  • Ability to interpret operating procedures, process trends, alarms, metallurgical results, production targets, equipment information, and technical drawings.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across shifts and functions, including during process upsets, equipment failures, and emergencies.
  • Ability to sustain attention, adapt to changing priorities, and exercise sound judgment in a field-based operation with time pressure, variable schedules, and frequent contact with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in metallurgy, mineral processing, chemical engineering, mining engineering, operations management, or a related field.
  • Experience with DCS or process-control systems, metallurgical accounting, shutdowns, commissioning, incident investigation, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience in an MSHA-regulated and collective-bargaining environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead pre-shift safety discussions, workplace examinations, equipment inspections, field-level risk assessments, and verification of permits, procedures, qualifications, environmental controls, and Lockout, Tagout, and Tryout requirements.
  • Maintain visible field presence across assigned process areas each shift; correct unsafe acts and conditions, reinforce stop-work authority, and verify corrective actions.
  • Conduct pre-shift meetings and communicate the shift plan, production and haulage priorities, hazards, equipment status, haulage and project constraints, and escalation expectations.
  • Assign operators to tasks and verify they are trained, qualified, and equipped for their assigned work.
  • Coach employees through field interaction, operating feedback, task training, cross-training, and development discussions.
  • Direct and monitor surface haulage, road maintenance, shaping, dust control, coordination with underground rail haulage, magnetic excavator operations, concentrator feed and crushing, conveying, TSF capping/IBWR placement, waste rock storage facility placement, and water systems within the assigned area.
  • Inspect operating circuits each shift and work with operators, Metallurgy, process control, maintenance, and Electrical to troubleshoot process, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation issues and minimize avoidable downtime.
  • Manage task sequencing, operator deployment, and break-in work within the shift; escalate changes affecting weekly commitments, production risk, staffing, overtime, or environmental compliance to the General Foreman - Concentrator.
  • Identify and correct waste, excessive consumption, rework, idle time, and operating practices that increase costs.
  • Support root-cause analysis, metallurgical test work, process optimization, defect elimination, shutdown preparation, and continuous-improvement activities.
  • Maintain environmental controls and perform assigned inspections for water, tailings, concentrate, reagents, spills, and waste within the area of responsibility.
  • Document production and cost effects of downtime, process instability, reduced recovery, quality deviations, and unplanned work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
