About The Position

The Outpatient Pharmacy Supervisor provides frontline leadership to ensure service excellence, compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations, and optimal staff engagement. The Outpatient Pharmacy Supervisor will complete prescription evaluation and verification, drug distribution, extemporaneous compounding, technical supervision, and clinical services as an outpatient pharmacist. To ensure financial viability of the pharmacy, the Outpatient Pharmacy Supervisor will work in collaboration with the Manager of Outpatient Pharmacy Services to minimize pharmacy costs, including but not limited to direct and indirect renumeration (DIR) fees, drug costs, and labor costs. The Outpatient Pharmacy Supervisor will report to the Manager of Outpatient Pharmacy Services and actively participate in development of new programs, services, practices and facilitate professional development activities. This position will be directly responsible for the direction and leadership of pharmacy technicians, pharmacy associates, pharmacy students, pharmacy interns, and pharmacy residents who provide outpatient pharmacy patient care and operational services. The position requires the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals from all clinical disciplines regarding activities related to the improvement of medication use. Ensures that all activities are consistent with overall hospital objectives. The position demonstrates competence to provide pharmaceutical care for neonatal (birth-discharge), pediatric (birth to 11 years), adolescent (12-18), adult (19-65), and geriatric (66-over) patients.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited College of Pharmacy (required)
  • Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY-1) Pharmacy Residency or three (3) years of relevant work experience (required)
  • Licensed or license eligible as a pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Kentucky (required)
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support or must obtain within 90 days from date of hire (required)
  • Current Immunization Delivery certification or must obtain within 90 days from date of hire (required)

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of third-party programs and other health maintenance programs (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead the provision of safe, timely, efficient, equitable, effective, and patient-centered pharmacy patient care services and operations for areas of responsibility.
  • Supports the mission of the Department of Pharmacy in the training and guidance of pharmacy students and residents.
  • Responsible for operational systems to ensure appropriate processing and dispensing of prescription medications.
  • Coordinate staff orientation, training, and competency assessment.
  • Planning and project management for specific projects and new services related to departmental goals
  • Coordinates patient billing activities including administration and monitoring of third-party payment program participation.
  • Provides leadership and oversight of medication access programs intended to ensure continuity of care for patients
  • Assists the Outpatient Pharmacy Manager with timely capital budget proposal requests; maintains revenue and expenses within target goal
  • Collaborate with pharmacy leadership in development and review of departmental policies and procedures
  • Provides leadership to ensure successful compliance with all federal, state, and local regulatory standards.
  • If required by pharmacy leadership, serve as Pharmacist-in-Charge.
  • Ensures that all pharmacy staff maintains appropriate credentials on file.
  • Oversees the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of staff.
  • Serves as a mentor to pharmacy staff, aiding in the development of the operational and clinical staff.
  • Works to promote compliance with established policies within the department of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee
  • Participate in formulary management by implementing therapeutic interchanges, seeking prior authorizations on behalf of eligible providers, assisting patients in procuring financial assistance, and promoting insurance enrollment for all patients
  • Helps oversee the procurement of medications
  • Recommend and evaluate drug inventory par levels
  • In collaboration with pharmacy leadership, create, implement, and maintain pharmacy policies and procedures related to outpatient pharmacy operations including, but not limited to: procurement, storage, security, and dispensing of prescription medications and provision of pharmacy services
  • Develops positive relationships with medical, nursing, pharmacy, and ancillary staff to ensure timely and accurate exchange of information across the organization
  • Provides oversight in planning, development, and implementation of departmental quality improvements efforts to ensure positive outcomes.
  • In collaboration with the Medication Safety Manager, review reports for medication errors, adverse drug events, ineffective service, or other problem identification.
  • Analyze and implement quality improvement measures for improving safety and performance.
  • Works diligently to eliminate waste through creative solutions and staff engagement.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct.
  • Comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
