About The Position

Water and Wastewater Operations is responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of the linear distribution and collection systems and our communal wastewater treatment plant and wells. The team is also responsible for the oversight of the operations and optimization at our large water and wastewater treatment facilities. In this role, you will supervise a Foreperson Water & Wastewater Operations and a Team Lead for Technical Analysts. You will motivate, guide, and support administrative, technical, and field staff in the operation and maintenance of the Regional Wastewater Collection Systems, Wastewater Pumping Stations, and Odour Control Facilities across the Region of Peel. You will ensure all Ministry of Environment reporting requirements are fulfilled, including Spill Reports, and oversee the timely completion of Annual Wastewater Treatment Plant reports. You will collaborate with other divisions and departments to deliver efficient, high-quality services, and communicate with members of the public and elected officials regarding service delivery. You will lead, coach, mentor, and manage the performance of a multidisciplinary team of unionized staff. You will provide on-site supervision and direction as needed, and coordinate 24-hour emergency standby coverage within the designated area. You will serve as the Overall Responsible Operator when required and participate in the standby rotation. You will ensure all staff receive appropriate and compliant training in accordance with regulations and Region of Peel policies. You will recommend equipment and machinery purchases and oversee ongoing maintenance and repair activities. You will respond to public and consumer inquiries related to section operations and provide accurate information as needed. You will ensure the Region responds effectively to wastewater system operational needs while minimizing service disruptions. You will prepare the section’s annual operating budget and manage the approved budget in alignment with established guidelines. You will review monthly Revenue and Expenditure reports for all cost centers. You will ensure all work complies with applicable legislation, regulations, and standards.

Requirements

  • A satisfactory Level 1 Criminal Record Check obtained directly from a police station (third‑party checks are not accepted).
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience, along with a minimum of 5 years of relevant water/wastewater experience.
  • A community college diploma (or equivalent) combined with Level II Ministry of Environment certification in Wastewater Collection and Water Distribution (Level III is considered an asset).
  • Level I Ministry of Environment certification in Wastewater Treatment.
  • Knowledge and experience in Municipal Wastewater Collection Systems, including operation of Wastewater Pumping Systems, Communal Wastewater Treatment Plants, Odour Control Facilities, Water Distribution Systems, and a solid understanding of related issues, services, processes, legislation, regulations, and standards.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills to plan and schedule Wastewater Operations and Maintenance activities, including adjusting operational parameters within Wastewater Treatment Facilities to meet Certificate of Approval requirements for plant effluents.
  • Ability to allocate resources effectively (staff and equipment), coordinate vehicle and equipment repairs, and prepare both operating and capital budgets.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills to work with internal and external stakeholders, coordinate activities, resolve conflicts, and provide leadership both on‑site and in the field.
  • Strong budget management, negotiation, and communication skills essential for success in this role.
