This role acts as a member and leader of the pharmacy technician team, overseeing adequate training and management of training materials. The supervisor establishes the work schedule for their area, evaluates the performance of direct reports, and ensures all pharmacy technician functions are completed in alignment with state, federal, and local regulations. They also fulfill the responsibilities of a pharmacy technician with a high level of knowledge and skills, demonstrating competency in medication delivery, setup, and filling of medication orders, and operation/troubleshooting of pharmacy automation. The supervisor serves as a role model for excellent customer service, retrieves information, communicates responses, differentiates needs requiring pharmacist involvement, and troubleshoots problem orders. They demonstrate knowledge of pharmacy regulatory requirements and compliance with accreditation standards, participating in Joint Commission readiness and other regulatory activities. The role provides operational coverage to all shifts, trains technicians, assesses ongoing competency, and contributes to the training and assessment of all staff. Monthly unit inspections are performed, and findings are documented. The supervisor is competent in at least one other area of operations in the department besides their primary area. They serve as a leader on the shift, maintaining workflow, delegating tasks, and handling issues. A team schedule is established and communicated, coordinated with other technician supervisors for adequate cross-coverage. Frequent interaction with pharmacy managers and other technician supervisors ensures staffing meets minimum requirements and daily workload is managed. Staff is adjusted during short-staffing situations. Positive team dynamics are fostered through regular meetings and communications. General technician meetings are held to discuss concerns and needs. Issues and conflicts are managed professionally and timely, with assistance sought from leadership and HR as needed. The supervisor acts as a liaison between technicians and pharmacy leadership, bringing staff ideas for process improvement and safety to leadership and supporting pharmacy policies and initiatives. They manage the interview and hiring process for pharmacy technicians, collaborating with leadership as needed. Performance evaluations are conducted in accordance with University and departmental expectations, including new hire, annual, and interim evaluations. Time and attendance are monitored and documented. Progressive discipline, up to and including termination, may be conducted in concert with leadership and HR. Employee engagement and retention efforts are promoted. Training schedules and assignments for new pharmacy technicians are coordinated, ensuring effective training experiences and accurate documentation. A process for evaluating new employee progress during training is established. Cross-training and competency maintenance are coordinated with supervisors in other functional areas. Training materials are maintained and up-to-date. Competency assessments and a schedule for continuing competency documentation are established for existing technicians. Areas of quality, regulatory, or operational improvement are identified, and proposals are developed for presentation to management. Process improvements are implemented in collaboration with the pharmacy manager. Other duties as assigned.
