About The Position

The New York City Department of Correction seeks to hire an experienced Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment) as Deputy Director of Fleet Maintenance and Operations. This role involves overseeing various operations and functions of a unit, such as garage operations or pumping stations, focusing on repair and maintenance. The Deputy Director will be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating these activities, along with performing administrative tasks. The position reports directly to the Director of the Fleet Maintenance and Operations Unit. The qualified candidate will coordinate the operation, maintenance, servicing, and repairs of all vehicles, ensure adequate parts supply, initiate purchases, manage vendor relations for timely repairs, and prepare records and reports. This role also involves managing compliance with City Policies, effective fleet management, and potentially operating motor vehicles. The candidate will conduct inspections, review work progress, act as a liaison, and assist the Director in planning cost-effective vehicle replacements and efficient utilization. Additional duties may be assigned by the Fleet Director. The ideal candidate is a motivated individual familiar with mechanics, capable of working independently and as part of a team, and proficient under pressure. Experience in supervising and managing capital and expense budgets for DOC Fleet vehicles, preparing budget proposals, and participating in budget deliberations is expected.

Requirements

  • All candidates must be working for a NYC agency and be permanent in the title of Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment).
  • Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an Auto Machinist, Auto Mechanic, Auto Mechanic (Diesel), Electrician (Automobile) or Machinist, two years of which must have been at a supervisory level.
  • OR At least five years of experience as described above, plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school, or relevant education in an accredited college, to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational high school. One year of acceptable experience will be credited for each 30 semester credits in college. However, all candidates must have the two years of supervisory experience.
  • Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • For appointment to certain positions a Class B Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York with no restrictions may be required. The Class B Commercial Driver License with no restrictions must be maintained for the duration of employment.

  • At least two years' experience as a Supervisor of Mechanics (Mechanical Equipment) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the operation, maintenance, servicing, and repairs of all vehicles.
  • Ensure that an adequate supply of proper parts is maintained in all stockrooms.
  • Initiate the purchase of parts and equipment.
  • Contact vendors to ensure repairs are made in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and keep track of records and weekly reports for submission to the Fleet Director.
  • Manage compliance with City Policies and effective fleet management.
  • Operate motor vehicles when need be.
  • Make inspections and review work progress.
  • Act as a liaison with departmental units and other outside organizations.
  • Assist and advise the Director in planning, reviewing, and coordinating programs aimed at cost-effectiveness of vehicle replacements and efficient utilization of the vehicles.
  • Perform other duties as requested/required by the Fleet Director.
  • Supervise, manage both capital and expense of all DOC Fleet vehicles.
  • Prepare budget proposals.
  • Participate in the deliberations relating to formulating and approving budget plans.
