About The Position

As the Supervisor, Muttart Conservatory, you will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight to drive public attendance, maximize revenue-generating opportunities, and deliver diverse visitor experiences. Managing a complex $5 million expenditure and $3.5 million revenue portfolio, you will steer the full lifecycle of annual business planning, fee setting, and commercial contract management. Positioned as a true Leader of People, you will foster a creative, safe, inclusive, high-performance culture, directing talent management and labor relations for an integrated team of up to 50 technical and non-technical staff within a unionized environment. Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Recreation, Tourism, Horticulture, Facility Administration/Management, Business, Marketing, Arts, Sciences, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience in a park or recreation facility environment within a large complex organization
  • Leadership & People Management: Direct a diverse team within a unionized environment, fostering a culture of safety, engagement, and high performance while managing labor relations, grievances, and professional development
  • Financial & Operational Oversight: Manage complex annual budgets (expenditures and revenues), including forecasting, financial reporting, and the procurement of materials and services
  • Strategic Planning & Administration: Apply project management principles, navigate organizational policies, and develop business continuity and capital plans to support facility operations and long-term growth
  • Communication & Relationship Building: Maintain effective relationships with external partners and community partners, and provide clear communication through reports, memos, and conflict resolution

Responsibilities

  • Establish and promote a unified vision for the Muttart Conservatory that drives public attendance, modernizes service offerings, and aligns operations with City Plan objectives and Council priorities
  • Lead the development and implementation of facility operations and animation plans, including space utilization, creative exhibit procurement, and horticultural requirements to maximize revenue and diverse visitor experiences
  • Oversee the full lifecycle of a complex budget (including expenditures and revenues), manage year-end forecasting, execute price-point analysis for fee-setting, and pursue alternative funding streams like grants and sponsorships
  • Direct, coach, and mentor an integrated team of up to 50 permanent and non-permanent staff to foster an inclusive, high-performance work environment focused on employee engagement and leadership development
  • Manage full-lifecycle talent administration within a unionized environment, establishing clear performance expectations, collaborating with union reps to resolve grievances, and leading formal disciplinary investigations when required
  • Direct the procurement of partner and commercial services, manage the development of legal license terms in collaboration with Legal Services, and oversee RFPs and contract compliance
  • Provide high-level technical and operational expertise for facility master planning up to a 10-year horizon, identifying and preparing business plans for capital growth and facility renewal projects
  • Provide strategic leadership for the Corporate Occupational Health and Safety program, ensuring strict legislative compliance, directing emergency response readiness, and overseeing incident investigations
  • Ensure strict organizational conformance with ENVISO and Integrated Pest Management requirements while protecting City assets through regular facility inspections and preventative security measures
  • Cultivate strategic relationships with external partners and corporate committees, and author comprehensive Council reports, memos, and briefing notes to support transparent municipal decision-making
