About The Position

The Supervisor, Medical Technologists provides leadership and supervision for clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. This role oversees daily laboratory operations, staffing, workflow, and testing activities, ensuring compliance with CAP, CLIA, regulatory requirements, SOPs, and quality standards. The supervisor monitors quality control, turnaround times, workload, productivity, and operational performance, while also providing technical oversight and resolving testing, instrumentation, specimen, and patient-result issues. Additionally, this position leads staff training, competency assessments, onboarding, scheduling, and performance management, and oversees laboratory equipment, inventory, supplies, and operational readiness. The role supports inspections, audits, proficiency testing, validations, calibrations, and quality improvement initiatives, collaborating with Medical Directors, laboratory leadership, clinical teams, and site administration. The supervisor identifies operational gaps, implements corrective actions and process improvements, and supports recruitment and employee relations in partnership with Human Resources.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience required
Valid State of Florida Medical Technologist license required

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological Science, Chemical Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.
Education must meet applicable Florida requirements for Clinical Laboratory Personnel licensure.
Current Florida Clinical Laboratory Supervisor license
Minimum of 3 years of relevant clinical laboratory experience, including experience in the applicable testing specialty.
Experience with quality control, regulatory compliance, laboratory instrumentation, troubleshooting, and staff training/competency.
Strong knowledge of clinical laboratory operations, quality control, laboratory safety, and CLIA/CAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to supervise, train, evaluate, and support laboratory personnel.
Ability to analyze laboratory performance, identify operational issues, and implement corrective actions and process improvements.
Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, teamwork, sound judgment, attention to detail, and commitment to quality and patient safety.

Previous supervisory, lead technologist, or laboratory leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Supervises, orients, trains, evaluates, and monitors on-the-job performance of staff responsible for performing microbiological, molecular biological and immunological tests on body specimens to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease.
Verifies identification of specimen with physician’s orders.
Prepares specimen for testing and handles all specimens in a safe and careful manner.
Supervises all research and prepares all pertinent patient data and refers to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.
Assists in monitoring staff productivity and quality of work through proactive reviews of attendance and scheduling accuracy.
Initiates performance management processes that address on-going performance issues.
Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action and provides supervision to laboratory subordinates in resolution of similar problems.
Runs quality-control tests according to procedure and maintains appropriate data recording.
Seeks help from the section head and documents actions taken.
Performs and reviews quality controls in testing and decides whether results are within acceptable ranges.
Advises technologists and other healthcare providers on proper methods of collection of specimens.
Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
