About The Position

The Supervisor, Medical Technologists (H) provides leadership and supervision for clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. This role supervises, orients, trains, evaluates, and monitors the on-the-job performance of staff responsible for performing microbiological, molecular biological and immunological tests on body specimens to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. The position also involves verifying specimen identification, preparing specimens for testing, and handling them safely. The supervisor prepares all pertinent patient data for research and refers it to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out. Additionally, they monitor staff productivity and quality of work, initiate performance management processes, and resolve test inconsistencies. This role runs quality-control tests, documents actions, and reviews quality controls to ensure acceptable ranges. They advise on proper specimen collection methods, establish and assess internal controls, and ensure employees are trained on controls and University policies. The Supervisor is accessible to testing personnel at all times, provides consultation to resolve technical problems, and is responsible for day-to-day supervision of high-complexity test performance. They monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to maintain analytic performance levels, ensure remedial actions are taken for deviations, and that patient test results are not reported until corrective actions are complete. The role also involves providing orientation and annual evaluations for all testing personnel, becoming competent in relevant methodology techniques, assuring QA and QC metrics are maintained, documenting monthly reviews, and maintaining adequate inventory levels. The supervisor may also cover the absence of personnel as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Certification in relevant specialty or field
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of business and management principles.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.
  • Certified by a national agency, ASCP/AMT/AAB (ASCP preferred)
  • Florida Department of Health Laboratory Supervisor
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a laboratory setting
  • High level of emotional intelligence to support effective supervision, communication, and team dynamics
  • Proficient computer skills, including laboratory information systems (LIS) and standard office software
  • Solid theoretical knowledge of laboratory methodologies and testing principles relevant to the areas supervised

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, orients, trains, evaluates, and monitors on-the-job performance of staff.
  • Verifies identification of specimen with physician’s orders.
  • Prepares specimen for testing and handles all specimens in a safe and careful manner.
  • Supervises all research and prepares all pertinent patient data and refers to pathologists for evaluation and sign-out.
  • Assists in monitoring staff productivity and quality of work through proactive reviews of attendance and scheduling accuracy.
  • Initiates performance management processes that address on-going performance issues.
  • Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action and provides supervision to laboratory subordinates in resolution of similar problems.
  • Runs quality-control tests according to procedure and maintains appropriate data recording.
  • Performs and reviews quality controls in testing and decides whether results are within acceptable ranges.
  • Advises technologists and other healthcare providers on proper methods of collection of specimens.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
  • Provides day-to-day supervision of high-complexity test performance by testing Personnel.
  • Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Ensures patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
  • Provides orientation to all testing personnel; and annually evaluate and document the performance of all testing personnel.
  • Become competent in methodology techniques pertinent to the specialty under his supervision.
  • Assures all QA and QC metrics are maintained and documenting the monthly review.
  • Maintaining adequate inventory levels.
  • Cover the absence of personnel as needed.
