About The Position

The Supervisor-Laboratory role involves overseeing laboratory operations, ensuring accurate and efficient testing, and managing quality control. This position requires a strong understanding of laboratory procedures, equipment, and personnel management. The supervisor is responsible for maintaining quality assurance, managing resources, and developing new procedures. They also play a key role in training staff and students, troubleshooting equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety policies.

Requirements

  • Assists in the selection of test methodology, materials, and supplies that are appropriate for clinical use and valid test results
  • Performs comparison studies of methods, instruments, and supplies
  • Verifies the test procedures performed and establishes the laboratory’s test performance characteristics, including the precision, accuracy, and reference ranges of each test, test system, and reporting system.
  • Ensures that work is done promptly, accurately, and efficiently from the collection of the specimen through sample analysis and reporting of test results.
  • Reviews work performed in assigned areas of responsibility and identifies substandard performance, initiates corrective action, education, disciplinary actions, repairs, etc.
  • Assists in bench testing, as necessary and acts as a resource person for technical questions/problems in areas of responsibility during all working hours.
  • Maintains quality assurance, quality control, and proficiency testing documentation and ensures it is performed as scheduled with corrective actions taken when indicated.
  • Oversees supply costs and utilization for assigned department and ensures availability of resources, materials, and equipment to meet needs of the department through requisition entry.
  • Develops and implements new procedures and maintains/updates current procedures/policies for section.
  • Assists in evaluating and training of personnel and students.
  • Participates in continuing and hospital education, as necessary, to update current knowledge in applicable departments.
  • Performs and completes all tests according to departmental procedure manuals within established turnaround times.
  • Handles all specimens according to departmental guidelines including unacceptable specimens and specimens for transport to reference labs.
  • Observes and abides by all mandated safety policies in performing duties.
  • Performs instrument troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance as required and/or assigned.
  • Performs phlebotomy duties and triage duties as necessary.
  • Demonstrates initiative and makes good decisions in situations not covered by policies.
  • Accepts and delivers constructive criticism in a positive manner.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by supervision.
