About The Position

This position assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the department, including providing work direction, expertise, and guidance to the staff. The role oversees clinical laboratory testing, evaluation of results, and the proficiency of testing. The Supervisor actively participates in projects to meet strategic initiatives, including the implementation and development of quantitative outcomes. They monitor budget compliance, analyze laboratory fiscal needs and departmental performance, and take action to address variances. Collaboration and implementation of performance improvement processes to optimize teammate engagement, and physician and patient satisfaction are key. The role ensures quality, regulatory, accreditation, compliance, and competency standards are met, along with compliance with current policies, procedures, and standardization/consolidation decisions. Coordination of orientation, training, and competency testing of staff and/or students is required. The Supervisor maintains competency, as needed, in test systems and processes in the defined discipline for the area of responsibility and serves as a technical resource for staff. Compliance with the quality plan by implementing and monitoring quality indicators, reviewing laboratory results for quality, accuracy, and validity, and documenting and implementing corrective action as appropriate are essential. The role involves selecting, coaching, and developing the team, setting clear expectations to inspire and motivate the team, and managing performance by recognizing achievement, providing feedback, and administering progressive discipline when necessary. Recommendations for hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations are part of the responsibilities. The Supervisor is responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that people actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations, and laws applicable to the organization's business.

Requirements

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC), or Medical Technologist (MT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent accrediting agency.
Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory sciences or medical technology or equivalent.
Typically requires 3 years of experience in technical laboratory services and operations.
Demonstrated leadership skills including project management, decision making, delegation, team building, customer service, and conflict resolution.
Ability to grow leaders through coaching, guidance, and development planning.
Advanced knowledge of regulatory compliance, accrediting and licensing agency requirements.
Current knowledge of medical and technical advancements to plan for future growth and development.
Intermediate computer skills including knowledge and experience with laboratory information systems.
Excellent organization and communication skills.
Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, twist and bend the majority of the workday.
May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, and/or infectious agents.
Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids.
Must wear appropriate safety protection, i.e. laboratory coats, gloves, gowns and/or eye protection.
Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
May be required to travel, therefore may be exposed to inclement weather and adverse road conditions.
