About The Position

Domestic Violence Services (DVS) is a program within the Human Resources Administration (HRA) that offers comprehensive support services to survivors of domestic violence and their families. DVS oversees the largest domestic violence shelter system in the country, providing safety and services to over 17,500 victims annually across more than 54 emergency shelters. The program also manages the 24-hour safe hotline, the No Violence Again (NoVA) program, the Domestic Violence Liaison Unit providing counseling at Benefits Access Centers, a Housing Unit, and a Support Services Team. DVS collaborates with other agencies and organizations to offer counseling, legal services, financial development, and job readiness programs. This specific role is within the NoVA Unit, which offers counseling, referrals to shelters, information on benefits, and other services, with a focus on victims of domestic violence within the Department of Homeless Services shelter system.

Requirements

  • Permanent in the Civil Service Supervisor I (Social Work) title or permanent in a comparable title eligible for 6.1.9 title change.
  • If hired provisionally, must take and pass the Civil Service exam when available to remain employed.
  • A Master's Degree in Social Work from an accredited school of social work.
  • One year of full-time satisfactory experience practicing social work utilizing one or a combination of casework, group work, and community organization methodologies.
  • Must obtain a valid Certified Social Worker (CSW) certificate or Licensed Master of Social Work license (LMSW) issued by the New York State Department of Education within one year of the date of appointment.
  • Employees who fail to obtain their CSW or LMSW within one year after appointment will have their probationary periods extended for no more than six months.
  • Failure to obtain the CSW or LMSW by the end of 18 months of service will result in dismissal.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Social Workers stationed in DHS facilities and PATH who provide counseling and referrals to domestic violence shelters, information about entitlements, and other services.
  • Provide regularly scheduled and extemporaneous clinical supervision to Social Work staff on their assigned cases.
  • Handle emergencies or special problems by providing guidance or assuming responsibility for the case.
  • Assign cases and regularly monitor the maintenance of current, clear, and complete case records.
  • Review completed Screening/Assessments for correctness.
  • Maintain internal administrative controls for tracking and expediting actions taken and forms submitted on each referral.
  • Collaborate with the Director on planning and providing staff training.
  • Instruct new staff under direct supervision on policies and procedures.
  • Prepare annual staff evaluations.
