About The Position

Building and maintaining provincial infrastructure is a significant undertaking. The Department of Public Works is responsible for Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges. The District Highway Operations Division plays a crucial role in managing snow and ice control services, road maintenance, and repair services across the province. As the Supervisor of Highway Maintenance, you will report to the Operation Supervisor and oversee the daily operations of your crew, who are involved in highway construction and maintenance activities. Your role will involve providing guidance to your team, monitoring their performance, ensuring the quality of work, and upholding safe work practices and policies.

Requirements

  • High School completion and a technical diploma in Civil Engineering Technology (or other related diploma) and two (2) years of related experience OR High School and 6 (six) years of related experience in road repair, construction and maintenance; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Strong supervisory skills and previous experience leading a crew.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record (as frequent travel is essential).
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance practices, construction methods, and department specifications.
  • Familiarity in a computerized environment, including spreadsheet, word processing, and email applications.
  • Problem solver and innovator who generates, promotes, and implements new ideas and resolves concerns.
  • Ability to adhere to and promote a safe, healthy, and engaged work culture where innovation is encouraged.
  • Proven and professional communication skills, both oral and written, for collaborating with Department personnel and the public.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Snow and Ice removal operations.
  • Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Experience working with a time reporting and/or work order generation system.
  • Knowledge of the Department’s maintenance policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the CUPE collective agreement.
  • Knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Act and Public Highways Act.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the effective and efficient utilization of equipment and material resources for road repair, maintenance, and snow and ice control operations.
  • Ensuring daily preventive maintenance is completed.
  • Conducting preliminary site investigations to identify and assess safety hazards and potential infrastructure problems, and resolving or recommending solutions.
  • Interacting with the public and private sector to address inquiries, complaints, and requests.
  • Supervising the Winter Snow and Ice Control Program during the winter season, ensuring service levels are maintained and the safety of the motoring public and Department staff.
  • Assisting in developing a plan of action for the Winter Works Program, including route planning, staffing, and equipment assignments.
  • Ensuring replenishment of road salt and traction sand stocks.
  • Coordinating the repair and maintenance of fleet equipment.
