About The Position

Position has direct responsibility for departmental coding; provides direct supervision to coders; approves time, coordinates vacation/leave requests; provides coaching and audits performance; assists divisions in the process of charge capture, compliance, and adherence to billing practices and policies under the direction of the Manager, Coding and Compliance, and the Director of Revenue Cycle and Financial Analysis. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
  • Certified Coding Associate (CCA) - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Certified Coding Specialist - Physican based (CCS-P) - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) - American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Certified Professional Coder - Apprentice (CPC-A) - American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Certified Professional Coder - Hospital (CPC-H) - American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Certified Professional Coder - Hospital Apprentice (CPC-H-A) - American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • ICD-10 Procedure Coding System
  • Microsoft Excel

  • CPC required with knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the day-to-day activities of the coding staff, including adherence to policies and procedures and setting work schedule.
  • Monitors coder performance and conducts performance reviews for coders in the area of responsibility.
  • Identifies missing charges and processes for billing.
  • Reviews documentation in the medical record to identify all pertinent facts necessary to select the comprehensive diagnoses and procedures that fully describe the patient’s conditions and treatment.
  • Meets with physicians to review documentation, resolve coding and secure signatures on all dates of service for attending and consultation services.
  • Assists with efforts to increase physician and administrative awareness of documentation requirements.
  • Processes appeals requests.
  • Assists Manager, Coding and Compliance in identifying trends/issues in coding, documentation and reimbursement.
  • Participates in activities related to compliance audits and ensures coders are following guidelines for billed services.
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives focused on charge capture, collection and all aspects of the revenue cycle.
  • Works closely with AR team and all those involved in the revenue cycle to ensure systems are effective and efficient.
  • Works with departmental appeals staff to identify trends and develop solutions.
  • Takes action to continuously improve service through all interactions.
  • Responds consistently to the needs of internal and external customers; works to identify customer needs and expectations.
  • Creates a positive work environment by treating all with dignity and respect.
  • Provides clear feedback to staff, clinical providers and others.
  • Maintains positive working relationship with staff, clinicians and all internal and external customers.
