About The Position

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Ortho Sports Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a full time Supervisor, Athletic Trainer to work in Coral Gables, FL. The Supervisor, Athletic Trainer assures the highest quality of patient care is provided by the athletic training staff and serves as a vital member of the department/unit management team. The individual in this position supervises athletic trainers and assists with the coordination of administrative support services as required for the operation of the department/unit. The incumbent also has direct patient contact under the supervision of attending physicians for the evaluation and treatment of medical and musculoskeletal pathology. The Supervisor, Athletic Trainer possesses the clinical evaluation and educational skills expected of an athletic trainer to effectively provide patient-centered care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Active FL Athletic Trainer license
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop and train others.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the supervision and the performance management/processing of Athletic Trainers, and other clinical staff as needed, including: hiring, training, evaluating, terminating and processing leave requests, FMLA's, accommodations and gathering any information required
  • Manage staff daily and promote lines of open communication, resolve staff conflict and grievances effectively, maintain satisfied and capable staff and maintain a positive atmosphere in clinic.
  • Encourage staff development.
  • Coordinate staffing athletic trainers at all locations
  • Maintains and monitors all staff schedules, overtime, PTO (vacation/sick), jury duty, educational, payroll adjustments; etc.
  • Provides supervision to ensure the effective implementation of patient services.
  • Maintains liaison with practice managers, physicians, athletic trainers and other staff.
  • Maintains constant communication (in-person, email, phone/voicemail, electronic medical record) with team and other contacts, including some after hours when necessary.
  • Conducts meetings with subordinates to ensure compliance with established practices.
  • Adheres to all program and agency policies and procedures.
  • Develops and implements operating policies and procedures and ensures compliance with University policies and procedures, keeping employees abreast of current changes and standards
  • Maintains awareness of current medical technology, health insurance trends, and government regulations.
  • Maintains a positive professional relationship with agency and intra-agency personnel.
  • Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
  • Conduct comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessment of patients with acute, chronic, or potential injuries and illnesses
  • Take a thorough history, including but not limited to: chief complaint, vitals, pain score, mechanism of injury, past medical history, and review of systems
  • Perform an appropriate physical examination, including but not limited to: range of motion testing, strength/manual muscle testing, neurovascular and sensation testing, palpation, special and ligamentous testing, and functional testing
  • Accurately and appropriately transcribe, enter, and/or execute standing orders at the direction of the supervising physician within the limits of the practice agreement/scope of practice
  • Provide patient education including answering questions and instructing on rehabilitation exercises
  • Document patient encounters and communicate with patients, other staff, and providers in electronic medical record
  • Schedules patient appointments, adds/removes/edit appointment slots, and edits appointment notes
  • Assists with clinic closures and reschedules by contacting patients and rescheduling appointments
  • Reviews clinic appointments as scheduled and communicates with schedulers as well as providers to ensure patients are scheduled with the most appropriate provider
  • Facilitates referrals to and from assigned providers
  • Responds to patient grievances, communicates with Patient Experience, gathers information from faculty and staff regarding patient issues
  • Attend division leadership meetings
  • Serve as a liaison to the university’s ATEP and serve as a preceptor, mentor, and/or supervisor for students observing, shadowing, and obtaining clinical experience in sports medicine
  • Serve as Program Director for Athletic Training Residency and Fellowship
  • Attend department leadership meetings
