About The Position

The Supervisor and Lead Mental Health Assistant actualizes the vision, mission, and values for Ellis Medicine and plays an instrumental role in the administrative and clinical functions of unit operations. This role serves as a resource, role model, and partner to the clinical and nursing leadership teams for all aspects of clinical resources.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with clinical and nurse leadership to monitor care delivery and ensure effective and efficient utilization of staff and other resources for the delivery of patient care.
  • Participates in hiring, discipline, and termination practices of MHA staff to achieve and maintain optimal care delivery on the unit.
  • Creates/validates daily MHA assignments that reflect appropriate assignments for scheduled staff each shift and their responsibility for patient care based on skill levels and patient needs.
  • Collaborates with Dept of Leadership and Human Resources business partner regarding MHA staff discipline according to policy.
  • Conducts timely performance evaluations of MHA staff members to reflect the provision of a framework for ongoing development of an employee.
  • Evaluates competencies of MHA staff to effectively and efficiently meet the needs of the unit and organization, and coaches MHA staff members when there is a need.
  • Knowledgeable of resources for self and MHA staff to meet the needs of the patient population.
  • Coaches and guides MHA staff in appropriate response to common diagnosis and related symptoms, behavior management, and high risk patient behaviors.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in the provision of care for individual patients and populations as defined in unit scope of service.
  • Functions as resource to MHA staff in providing safe and quality patient care.
  • Educates MHA staff on current and new policies and procedures.
  • Partners with clinical and nurse leadership to assist/administer MHA interviews and onboarding during the recruitment and hiring process monitor MHA staff attendance and punctuality, quality initiatives related to patient care, MHA orientation process and competency completion.
  • Partners with clinical and nurse leadership to promote an environment that enhances safety, communication and satisfaction for patients and staff.
  • Monitors unit supply budget and adherence to supply par levels.
  • Partners with clinical and nursing leadership to order supplies needed for patient care
  • Responsible for annual vacation scheduling for inpatient units
  • Assists in accurate record keeping of staffing related materials (1:1 sitter log, approved bonuses, vacation requests, education, overtime)
  • Partners with nurse leadership to forecast high-demand periods and plan accordingly
  • Prepares and posts daily staffing, projecting staffing patterns for the week refelcting NYSNA and Ellis policies.
  • Maintains optimum staffing on any given shift; Assures an adequate number of nursing and MHA personnel are scheduled and available to meet patient care needs, including proactively analyzing resources and patient care needs.
  • Notifies dept leaders of any staffing problems in a timely manner
  • Maintains all staffing time changes daily
  • Updates all daily staffing adjustments, including sick calls, floats, staff assignments, and sitter codes; enters all scheduling updates in the scheduling system.
  • Partners with off-shift Administrative Clinical Supervisor regarding off-shift schedule changes or needs
  • Generate weekly and monthly schedules for clinical staff, ensuring equitable distribution of shifts and adequate coverage for IPMH services.
  • Handle day-to-day scheduling changes, including sick calls and unexpected staffing needs, with minimal disruption to clinical operations.
