Position Summary: The Advanced Practice Provider will be present in the operating room for all cardiovascular surgical cases prior to the start of the case, unless otherwise instructed by the attending surgeon. The incumbent will also supervise various human resources functions relating to assigned Advanced Practice Professionals (APPs)

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program or advanced practice registered nurse program
  • Current Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure in State of Florida, renewed every two years.
  • Maintains BLS/Healthcare Provider.
  • ACLS and PALS certifications as required by patient population
  • Three years’ experience in a surgical setting as an advanced practice provider for a cardiothoracic surgeon

Responsibilities

  • Performs complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in diagnosing medical and surgical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and services for quality patient care.
  • Assiststhe CVOR staff and anesthesiologists in the preparation of the patient.
  • Acts as advanced resource or lead worker in a surgical setting.
  • Assists on cardiac surgical cases as designated by the surgeons.
  • Remains with the patient at completion of the operation to transfer and transport the patient to the CVICU and remains with them to complete a safe hand off of the patient to the CVICU team.
  • Maintains call responsibility and able to respond on site within 30 minutes.
  • Makes all surgical entries into the STS database (Cardio Access) on the day of surgery.
  • Participates in surgical procedures in the surgical research laboratory.
  • Participates in certain aspects of clinical research as designated by the surgeons
  • Writes a "brief op note" in compliance with OH standards immediately following the completion of each operation or procedure.
  • Maintains the registry of all intra-operative photos and videos.
  • Maintains the registry of all surgical cases performed and sends the updated spreadsheet to the surgeons at the end of each week
  • Obtains detailed history and performs physical examinations on patients.
  • Assists in providing care for patients receiving surgery; writes appropriate orders, including those for perioperative orders, narcotics, stimulants, and depressant drugs.
  • Writes and/or dictates progress notes on patient charts indicating patient status and treatment or procedures performed.
  • Performs emergency life-saving procedures in cases such cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar catastrophe.
  • Performs daily rounds independently or with attending physicians and/or students.
  • Operates with the highest degree of independence in provision of patient care services with minimal physician supervision and generally in a highly specialized area.
  • Performs under supervision of medical staff member as an Advanced Practice Provider.
  • Supervises various human resources functions, including developing coaching plans and working with Manager, APP on performance counseling, recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of APPs.
  • Ensures compliance with certifications, licenses, and required education for assigned APPs.
  • Monitors/supervises appropriate staffing of APPs to ensure patient care needs are met and budgetary boundaries are observed.
  • Leads and participates in departmental and hospital programs, committees, and special projects to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Acts as a role model and resource person for staff.
  • Participates in review and revision of policies and procedures.
  • Establishes relationships with professionals of other health-related groups within the community.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication with diverse populations, including physicians, employees, patients, and families.
  • Participates in basic science and clinical research projects.
