About The Position

This position will supervise the daily activities of employees engaged in the food service area. The role involves monitoring cooking and serving well-balanced meals in a clean, safe environment, directing the work activities of all assigned employees in the food services section, and determining resource needs and allocation. The supervisor will also direct and review the work of subordinate food service employees and inmate workers, coordinate work operations related to food preparation, sanitation, and food delivery, and ensure efficient and economical operations. Recommendations for selections, status changes, disciplinary actions, and terminations of inmate workers will be made. Training employees and inmate workers in food preparation and kitchen sanitation, solving problems related to the work supervised, and determining material, equipment, and food supplies needed for daily operation are key responsibilities. The supervisor will also lead employee staff and inmate workers in food preparation and sanitation duties and perform other related duties as required or directed.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience working in a lead/ supervisory capacity in a high-volume institutional food services organization and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in culinary arts; OR Five (5) years of experience working in a lead/supervisory capacity in a high-volume institutional food services organization and an associate's degree from an accredited college or university in culinary arts; OR An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.
  • Ability to develop timetables, manpower, projections and ability to monitor and revise as needed to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of food service practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge and/or skill required in a high-volume food service operation.
  • Managerial/leadership abilities.
  • Ability to coordinate and direct the activities of assigned personnel.
  • Ability to communicate and work with other departments.
  • Knowledge of MS Office, Word and Excel.
  • Must be able to function in a prison environment.
  • Will be required to pass a physical a drug test and a TB screening.
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, weekends and be on call.
  • Must be a resident of Shelby County and shall continue to reside in the County as a condition of their employment (exemption for certain public safety/civil service employees applies).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a hospital, military, large organization or school environment is preferred.
