The County of Los Angeles is currently offering a 20% bonus for full-time Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist I hired by Correctional Health Services and working on-site in a designated facility to meet critical healthcare needs for the uniquely underserved jail population. Workforce Shortage Recruitment: New appointments and current incumbents shall be compensated at Step 3 of the applicable salary range. This is in effect until June 30, 2026, or until it is driven that a shortage no longer exists, whichever is sooner.

Requirements

  • OPTION I: Two years of experience at the level Clinical Laboratory Scientist I in the service of Los Angeles County.
  • OPTION II: One year of experience at the level of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist II assisting a supervising clinical laboratory scientist in the operation of a clinical laboratory unit resolving technical problems and developing recommendations on new or alternative equipment, methods, or materials in addition to performing regular clinical laboratory scientist duties, or assigning, training, reviewing and participating in the work of a group of clinical laboratory scientists engaged in the performance of a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests in a specialized laboratory.
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist's license issued by the California State Department of Health Services.
  • PHYSICAL CLASS 2 - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
  • Experience at the level of Clinical Laboratory Scientist I in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: Performs a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests within a specialized area (such as biochemistry, hematology, microbiology, or immunohematology) or across specialty lines using manual or instrumented methodology.
  • Experience at the level of Clinical Laboratory Scientist II in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: Assisting a supervising clinical laboratory scientist with running a clinical laboratory unit by troubleshooting technical issues, evaluating, and recommending new or alternative equipment, methods, or materials, while also performing standard clinical laboratory scientist duties. OR Leading a group of clinical laboratory scientists by assigning work, training staff, reviewing performance, and participating in standardized clinical laboratory testing procedures.
  • All required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted, or your application cannot be considered.
  • Specialized laboratories include biochemistry, hematology, immunology, blood banking, microbiology, or toxicology.

  • A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in: Clinical Laboratory Science, Clinical Research Administration -or- Medical Technology.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and prioritizes tasks for one shift in a hospital or ambulatory care laboratory unit. This guarantees provider requested test procedures are processed promptly and within established time frames.
  • Orients new employees and licensed trainees to the overall operations of the laboratory unit, and trains or supervises their training in the specific procedures which the unit is responsible for performing safely and accurately.
  • Evaluates the work of all personnel assigned to the unit and counsels them on steps they may need to take to improve their performance; effectively recommends or initiates disciplinary action and the adjustment of employee grievances.
  • Supervises the search of technical publications and other literature in the field to identify new equipment, methods, materials, or items of supply which may produce accurate and reliable test results more quickly and efficiently than the present system.
