About The Position

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides high-quality, free civil legal services to low‑income individuals and families in 114 counties across North and West Texas. Our mission is to ensure equal access to justice and improve the lives of low-income communities by providing high-quality legal representation, strategic litigation, valuable legal advice and meaningful collaborations, outreach, and community education. LANWT seeks a dynamic, self‑motivated Supervising Attorney with vision, initiative, and a strong commitment to public interest law to lead its Legal Advocacy for Health Project. In addition to providing daily legal representation to clients, the successful candidate will supervise the work of the team and collaborate with partner agencies, including school districts, medical providers, shelters, and crisis centers to provide coordinated, holistic advocacy.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas.
  • A minimum of 3 years relevant legal experience and a demonstrated, zealous commitment to public interest law, serving the indigent, or other relevant legal experience.
  • Strong understanding of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure and Texas Rules of Evidence required.
  • Demonstrated trial and advocacy skills with progressive litigation experience.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, community partners, and stakeholders in complex and sensitive situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor, and develop attorneys and staff with varying levels of experience.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence and professionalism, including the ability to build trust, maintain productive relationships, navigate difficult conversations, and manage conflict effectively.
  • Ability to provide clear direction, delegate effectively, establish priorities, and hold team members accountable while maintaining a supportive work environment.
  • Experience coordinating community services, partners, and education.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop, implement, and evaluate projects effectively.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and make sound decisions in a dynamic legal services environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience handling public benefit, Social Security, landlord-tenant, and driver’s license cases preferred.
  • Prior supervisory, management, or leadership experience preferred, including experience providing feedback, addressing performance concerns, and supporting staff development.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the office’s litigation and other advocacy, planning and implementation of outreach to and collaboration with members of the low-income community and community groups, and fostering supportive relationships with the local bar.
  • Handling their own caseload proportionate to their management and administrative duties.
  • Providing strong leadership, supervision, mentorship, and support to staff while promoting a culture of accountability, collaboration, professional growth, and high-quality client service.
  • Conducting case staffing and provide strategic guidance on case strategy, litigation, and advocacy approaches.
  • Reviewing and assigning new client applications for appropriate assistance.
  • Monitoring open cases for activity and review closed cases for proper recordkeeping, file maintenance, grant compliance, and overall quality of service provided.
  • Conducting regular case reviews of open cases and provide feedback and guidance to ensure effective representation and compliance with program standards.
  • Providing co-counseling assistance, training, mentorship, and professional development support to staff attorneys and promote a positive, collaborative work environment.
  • Providing effective supervision and leadership to attorneys and support staff by setting clear expectations, delegating responsibilities, providing constructive feedback, recognizing strengths, and supporting professional growth.
  • Ensuring staff comply with grant requirements, including legal work, goals, objectives, timely submission of reports, funding applications, budget preparations, proposed numerical outcomes, and outreach.
  • Participating in management meetings and projects and contribute to organizational planning and program development.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with client groups, community groups, social service agencies, and local bar associations.
  • Conducting employee performance evaluations, provide ongoing performance feedback, address performance concerns, and handle corrective action or disciplinary issues with the assistance of the Managing Attorney.
  • Addressing workplace and team conflicts in a timely, constructive, and professional manner by facilitating communication, encouraging problem-solving, and collaborating with staff and management to resolve issues.
  • Handling client complaints, process administrative items, and address issues related to timekeeping, travel, leave, check requests, training requests, payroll, and other operational matters.
  • Exercising sound judgment in balancing client advocacy, staff supervision, administrative responsibilities, grant obligations, and program goals in a fast-paced legal services environment.
  • Promoting an inclusive, respectful, and supportive workplace culture that values teamwork, accountability, diversity, and client-centered advocacy.
  • Other duties which may be assigned by the Managing Attorney, Deputy Director, or Chief Executive Officer.
