About The Position

The BJRC Summer Enrichment Program Teacher will work at the Bridgeport Juvenile Residential Center for a 6-week program aimed to help young people ages 12-17 to improve their educational, social & emotional skills. The teacher will work under the direction of the Site Director to lead classroom instruction, delivering an age-appropriate, gender- and trauma-sensitive curriculum with an intensive focus on remediation in math, reading and writing. Training and a curriculum will be provided before the program begins.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Math, English, or related field
• State of Connecticut teaching certification in Grades 6-12, in appropriate content area where applicable
• Experience in school or after-school instruction
• Interest in working with young people who may struggle academically and/or emotionally
• Willingness to build relationships with young people
• Commitment to the Domus mission, values and core principles
• A strong work ethic
• Ability to manage classroom behavior
• Flexibility and adaptability, able to shift styles to fit the needs of a wide range of cultures, people and organizations

Nice To Haves

• Master’s or advanced degree
• Fluent in Spanish or Creole
• Familiarity with the Sanctuary model of trauma-informed care and Cornell University’s Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Core Program Beliefs

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in math, reading and writing following prescribed curriculum
• Develop weekly lesson plans
• Instruct students individually or in small groups
• Use trauma-informed methodologies to help manage student behavior issues in the classroom
• Follow the security and safety protocols of the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center
• Determine opportunities for Intern to support and lead classroom instruction
• Work with the program director to evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum and make adjustments as necessary
