About The Position

The Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services department is responsible for building a healthy, inclusive and vibrant City, as well as ensuring that communities, residents and visitors have access to the recreation and cultural places, programs, events and services that allow them to experience all the benefits the City has to offer, and overseeing Buildings and Facilities Management for improved service delivery integration, ensuring the best possible client experience in City facilities. Under the guidance of a supervisor, you are responsible for assisting with all functions related to the delivery of summer camp programs to ensure a safe and enjoyable camp experience for special needs children/youth registered at the camp. You provide direct client care and intervention, and program adaptation. The programs may take place indoors, outdoors, or in a variety of locations. Work is performed in accordance with related legislation, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16 years.
  • Post-secondary Student - completion of first year college or university in Nursing, Developmental Services Worker, Recreation and Leisure, or related field.
  • Student must be returning to school in the fall.
  • Minimum of 8 months but less than 1 year of related experience.
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certificates.
  • AODA Accessibility/IASR Training.
  • Crisis Prevention/Intervention training certificate.
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
  • Ability to operate any required tools/equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and/or written directions/procedures.
  • Physically Fit and able to participate in active recreation activities.
  • Proper attire and footwear.

Nice To Haves

  • Alternative Communication Systems (ASL - American Sign Language) training is desirable.
  • Ergonomic Lifts and Transfers training is an asset.
  • Interest or experience working with people with disabilities.
  • Experience working with children and/or youth with special needs.
  • Programming skills in crafts, sports, games, creative play, stories and music.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with all functions related to the delivery of summer camp programs to ensure a safe and enjoyable camp experience for special needs children/youth registered at the camp.
  • Providing direct client care and intervention.

  • Accompanying and supervising participants in a variety of environments including aquatic.
  • Performing lift and transfers procedures (as instructed and trained) to avoid participant or self injury.
  • Maintaining a fun and safe environment.
  • Promoting teamwork and working independently when appropriate.
