About The Position

The Mentor position is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the activities scheduled for the Apprenticeship in Medicine program's six-week summer curriculum for high school students of diverse backgrounds. The purpose of the program is to increase the number of persons from diverse backgrounds in medicine and other health care professions. This position assists in providing a variety of "hands-on" clinical experiences to students to gain an understanding and appreciation of common, important medical problems that have an impact on their community. Qualified candidates must be culturally sensitive and able to work with a diverse high school student population; and must have a serious interest in the academic development of youth. This position's responsibilities are performed at the Medical College of Wisconsin. There will be a team of medical students serving as mentors that will be responsible for supervising a minimum of 20 high school students. The Mentor position is a seven (7) week summer position that includes one (1) week of preparation time prior to the start of the program.

Requirements

  • The ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals is essential.
  • Must be able to work in team setting with other mentors, faculty and immediate supervisor.
  • Must possess strong organization and planning skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with word processing software programs and other office equipment including copiers and fax machines is essential.
  • The position requires a minimum of one completed year of medical education at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in an educational setting, tutoring, preparation of lesson plans or classroom teaching is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Contact and confirm all scheduled instructors/presenters for program implementation.
  • Develop stimulating exercises/assignments to conduct as workshops for students.
  • Visit clinic sites and apprise preceptors of clinical proficiency requirements and clinical evaluations.
  • Attend all program lectures, field trips, and activities with students.
  • Prepare weekly quizzes for students according to scheduled daily lecturers.
  • Maintain records and report academic progress of students.
  • Monitor clinical progress of students.
  • Supervise overall program activities and high school students.
  • This position will interact with MCW faculty, staff, and other medical students.
  • This position will interact with community-based clinicians and other health-care professionals.
