About The Position

We are seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our summer team as Recreation Counselors. This role involves working with children, serving as a positive role model, and creating memorable experiences. The Geneseo Summer Rec program runs Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, from June 29th to August 7th. Staff are scheduled for 20-25 hours per week, based on availability. Attendance at 1-2 on-site training days in June is mandatory. This position supports the Y's mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Counselor will provide direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp, fostering positive relationships with both children and their families, and encouraging peer-to-peer connections. Counselors motivate campers to participate in daily activities and ensure their health, welfare, and safety.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with children, preferably in a rec/day camp setting.
  • At least 16 years of age.
  • CPR, First Aid, New Employee Orientation, and Child Abuse Prevention certifications required by July 1 and maintained throughout the summer season.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: group work/activities, child development, arts & crafts, and physical fitness.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises a group of children, responsible for their health, welfare, and safety.
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness.
  • Provides direct leadership to the assigned group and maintains constant visual contact with all assigned children.
  • Encourages camper participation and builds enthusiasm for programs.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children, and other staff.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Assists staff team members with planning and implementation of camp activities.
  • Accurately completes all required paperwork, including attendance records and accident/incident reports.
  • Notifies parents of attendance as appropriate.
  • Follows all YMCA and regulatory agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintains friendly relationships with campers, parents, counselors, and other YMCA staff.
  • Keeps program areas neat, clean, organized, and free from clutter.
  • Attends staff meetings and recruitment events as assigned.
  • Is on time, appropriately dressed, and ready to begin program as scheduled.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
