About The Position

This seasonal position directs the recreational activities for children in grades k – 3. The camp runs for six weeks in the summer (June 15 to July 24), Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at four of the elementary schools. Work is performed with independent judgment under the general supervision of the Summer Playground Supervisor. This position is not eligible for paid sick hours, due to being a six-week, seasonal position. Applicants for playground camp counselor must be at least 15 years of age.

Requirements

Must be at least 15 years of age.
Clear understanding of recreational department activities and procedures.
Interpersonal skills
Display a knowledge of Basic First-Aid
Maintains regular and punctual attendance
Stand; walk, bend, stoop; use hands to handle, or feel equipment and supplies.
Sit at times on the floor or ground with children and reach with hands and arms.
Stand for long periods of time, up to 3 hours.
Engage in play with camp participants.
Be able to run after the camper if they attempt to leave the camp location.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Requires normal range of hearing, eyesight and verbal communications to record, prepare and communicate appropriate camper activities.

Nice To Haves

Experience organizing youth activities is preferred.
CPR/AED and First Aid preferred.

Responsibilities

Meets with Camp Supervisor and other camp counselors during In-Service training to develop a themed activity calendar for the summer.
Supervises volunteers and children in daily camp activities.
Ensures the safety of campers at all times.
Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
Performs all other work assigned.
