About The Position

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is looking for a Marketing and Communications Assistant to join our Education, Training and Research Department. Reporting to the Marketing and Communications Coordinator and the Acting Director of Education, Training and Research, the Marketing and Communication Assistant supports the promotion of Education, Training, and Research department (formerly known as the Rupertsland Institute) and expands the reach of the organization by assisting in the implementation of innovative marketing strategies. The Marketing and Communications Assistant provides marketing, communication, and administrative support to the Marketing and Communications Coordinator by creating and updating content for the website and social media channels and writing and editing publications for content and clarity. This position will be a great fit for someone who is flexible and adaptable to work in a diverse and fast paced environment.

  • Post-Secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite applications and online platforms including online/digital meeting applications.
  • Ability to work within designs softwares such as Canva, Adobe Creative, Suite along with the ability to learn new softwares.
  • This position is open to Métis students only. This would include citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
  • Candidates must be between the ages of 17 – 29.
  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in full-time post-secondary education and must be returning to school full-time in September 2026.
  • Ability to work a regular schedule from Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends as required.
  • Ability to travel throughout Alberta, with notice.
  • Reliable transportation and valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Acceptable attainment and annual maintenance of a Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check and an Intervention Record Check is required.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 – 2 years of administrative experience is an asset. School or volunteer experience is considered valid experience.
  • Marketing or Communications experience is an asset.
  • An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Marketing and Communications Coordinator to develop and implement communication and promotion strategies.
  • Assist the Marketing and Communications Coordinator in the development of an annual communication and marketing plan.
  • Assist the Marketing and Communications Coordinator in the implementation of the annual Communications Business/Strategic Plan initiatives.
  • Identify appropriate communication materials based on audience and goals.
  • Gather, research, and prepare communications materials for internal and external audiences.
  • Assist the Marketing and Communications Coordinator to write, edit, and publish copy for multiple platforms including but not limited to Education, Training, and Research websites, social media, radio, video, and various print products.
  • Coordinate and assist in creative development writing, proofreading, and revising and editing of various materials including business plans, annual reports, speeches and presentations, press releases, and key briefing materials.
  • Create and prepare presentations, reports, newsletters, and other communication collateral for Senior Leadership and the Education, Training, and Research internal departments.
  • Ensure technical terms and terminology remain consistent throughout all communication materials.
  • Recommend changes to ensure all communications are consistent and appropriately reflect the Education, Training, and Research values and standards.
  • Coordinate the development and production of communication materials for internal and external use.
  • Coordinate photography, design, film, and printing for production.
  • Develop and implement advertising campaigns appropriate for print or electronic media.
  • Contribute to the archive of photography and produced materials.
  • Create and post approved social media messages. Monitor social media accounts and respond in a timely manner, and report on statistics for social media usage.
  • Monitor and maintain Education, Training, and Research websites to update collateral and ensure pertinent, accurate, and current information is available.
  • Regularly review and report on social analytics, assessing performance of campaigns and setting strategic goals.
  • Assist with special events and project coordination as it relates to Communications, including brochures creation and distribution and related marketing activities.
  • Ensure all marketing adheres to Education, Training, and Research brand standards, guidelines, and overall strategy.
  • Stay current on copyright and plagiarism legislation and regulations.
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.
