About The Position

Earthjustice's Washington D.C. Regional Program focuses on protecting community health and the environment from pollution through litigation, administrative advocacy, and partnerships. They work on issues such as national air quality standards, hazardous air pollutants, chemical disaster prevention, clean waterways, and climate protection, with a focus on advancing equity and justice. Founded in 1971, Earthjustice has a strong history of achieving significant environmental protections by using the power of law and collaboration to protect people's health, preserve natural places, advance clean energy, and combat climate change. They partner with numerous groups and supporters on major cases nationwide. This role is for a summer law clerk position, and students are expected to work in or near an office where the program is located.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a U.S. law school through fall 2027 (not graduating before December 2027).
  • Available to commit ten weeks during summer 2027.
  • Must work from the U.S. during the clerkship.
  • Submit a resume.
  • Submit a cover letter addressing relevant background, reasons for interest in Earthjustice's mission and litigation teams, and particular environmental or public interest issues that inspire you.
  • Submit a recent legal writing sample of no more than 10 pages, primarily reflecting your work, with a cover page indicating the extent of edits and feedback.
  • Submit an unofficial transcript.

Responsibilities

  • Work with attorneys on case development and litigation strategy.
  • Draft pleadings and briefs.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Develop strategy and legal theories.
  • Gather evidence.
  • Attend client meetings and court proceedings.
  • Participate in programmatic offerings such as seminars on environmental issues, interactions with environmental groups, and a job interview workshop.
